I have been in NYC for the past 4 days interviewing and I accepted an offer today. Anyways, I start in 3 weeks (Sept 7th) and I need to find a place to rent ASAP. FYI, my office is located on 6th (ave of americas) & 55th. I have been looking at Hoboken and surrounding areas, do you guys know of any good places to live that are near a train station as my fd wont be making the journey up here? Willing to live with other room-mates, nothing more than 4 though and I would like to keep my portion of the monthly rent under $1750.

Also, any websites or places to look at apartments would be greatly appreciated. I am looking to stay close to the city, I do not want a long commute. I am from Florida so I know NOTHING about the city or where I can find a decent apartment.

Try craigslist.org

I have found all of my apartments in philly through craigslist and it has worked out great for me. I would imagine the NYC craigslist is just as good or better for finding apartments.

My friend has an empty bedroom at his apartment on 2nd and 63rd which his roommate recently moved out of, he might consider looking for a new roommate. I have two car driveway for rent if you are willing to share with the RX8 and college kids .

I live in the Bensonhurst area of Brooklyn.You can look into the Bensonhurst, Bay Ridge, and Dyker Heights area of Brooklyn. All very nice upper middle class neighborhoods that can easily fit your budget for rent. You can find very nice apartments with two bedrooms and decent space for $1500 in these areas. Many have driveways for rent also. Subways are very easily accessible in the area (D, M, R, N, F trains) and these areas are within 30 minutes of Manhattan via train or 15-20 minute drive. Living within the 5 boroughs of NYC is much easily than outside. Traveling between NJ and Manhattan will cost more and will be more time consuming.

As I said before, I do have a driveway space available if needed. I live with my parents as a full time college student (I attend NYiT in midtown Manhattan). As of now, it is occupied by our Infiniti. My friend might be searching for a new roommate to share his apartment with again since school is coming up around the corner (Sept. 8th) and he will need to split the rent. If you are considering these options, feel free to let me know, I will gladdy help you out.

edit: I also vote for craigslist if you are looking for apartments. There are also other websites that my friends use, but I have forgotten the names. Ill ask around for you.

A budget of $1,750 is quite a lot for one person. Average price range for a one bedroom in Queens, is about $1,000-$1,100. Unless you get a city view in a high rise apartment building, then the prices skyrocket. I live in Queens so I have to favor my borough. Astoria is as close to the city as you can get without the high cost of Manhattan. It has a lot to offer (restaurants, bars, lounges, clubs, shopping etc) without the noisy city soundtrack. I would also recommend Sunnyside. Both areas have a train accessible to them. Astoria though has the N train which means that you would take just one train to reach your job, and you would get there in about 15-20 min. max. As the other poster suggested, look at Craigslist. Apartments.com isn't too bad neither, but craigslist is your best bet. Best of luck with your transition here, its a different life style. Too bad the FD isn't coming along, anywho welcome to New York!

I like Astoria and Williamsburg alot. Astoria is more affordable and has lots of local nightlife and restaurants. Stay by 31st street and the train is within walking distance.

what kind of life style do you live? or want to live! there are a lot of options around here. for that price you can get a studio in the city or a nice 1-2 bedroom in greenpoint or williamsburg or you move out a little further and get a hell of a lot more. I have a two bedroom in queens for half of your budget and it take me about 30-45minutes to get to work on the train. but yeah, craigslist.org is a good place to look

you can get ure own apt in queens (flushing/college point area). Takes about 45 min - hr to get into the city.

Hoboken is expensive, a lot closer to the city and better take breaks since u wont be getting raped paying nyc taxes/

you live in long island you dont know anything about nyc traffic. You will sit on 1 block for 45 minutes. The worst was 3rd ave i sat on 1 block for an hour and 15 minutes ,moved from one end to the other.

I have 2 bedroom apt, 2 skylights, 8 windows, 967 sq feet of just MY SPACE all for $1400 (hot water, heat included), utilities go for $75 a month (gas and electricity).

Personally i prefer to live without roomates, now im married so its diff lol

First and foremost, thank you to everyone who replied! I will begin looking at all the places that have been suggested. What is really important to me is a short commute to work, need to be near the train station and I dont want to live in a complete shithole. Like I mentioned in my original post, I know NO ONE in NYC so this help is very much appreciated. My boss suggested Hoboken or Seacaucus (spelling?) or Jersey City.


Will start looking at craigslist, that was my first thought but I always hear of people getting the sketchiest room-mates from craigslist.

Thanks for the offer! Unfortunately I headed back to Florida this morning. When I get up to NYC, I definitely want to meet the rotary community even though I am not sure when I will be able to get my car, probably not until next summerish.

Work is important to me, but I like bitches, esp asian as most of you know, and going out at night whether it be clubs or bars. I am not really into trashy places, nothing to to upscale when going out but I dress and look a certain way that I usually end up at the higher end bars anyways. Seems like a lot of people are suggesting williamsburg so that is where I will begin my search.

Thanks for the help Gordon, I was actually talking to John Bradshaw at GS regarding job opportunities but it just did not pan out. I will look into the areas that you suggested, can not wait to finally start working.

With your budget which is good, i would live either in hoboken or soho.

The commute to your job would be easy and nightlife is amazing.

^Yes, have never seen so many hot asian girls before in my life, thought I was in Asia for a bit. Girls are just incredible esp on 5th & park avenue, sweet baby jesus.

Will check out Soho. Any thoughts on Secaucus? A few people have told me to check that area out as-well.

I'm from the east village and HIGHLY recomend it here BUT only west of Ave C. Close to subway (f or J line) and a very fast (10-15min) commute on the f line str8 to 55th & 6th. Night life is off the hook out here & it's extremely diverse. I would avoid NJ do to the cost & headaches of transportation. if the NJ path goes down then you would have to take a shuddle bus into the city that can result in more than a hr commute if that. Just my 2cents, Good luck & welcome to the city that never sleeps......

Seacaucus is great in terms of commuting but boring in terms of surroundings.

Depends on what your looking to get out a location, but personally i believe the New Jersey side is the best of both worlds.

Being familiar with Brooklyn, others have also mentioned Williamsburg Brooklyn and the surrounding areas and you should definitely consider them as well. I have noticed that most residents of Williamsburg and Green Point are hipsters .

The areas I mentioned in my previous post consist mostly of Italians and Asians. There are many convenient places for groceries and such within a few minutes walk. You get the usual great and authentic Italian and Asian eateries in the area also.

As others have mentioned, it really depends on what you are looking to live around and your personality. Every borough and neighborhood has its pros and cons. I am not going to say my neighborhood is better or worse than others (this isnt a battle of the neighborhoods ). If you area interested in exploring the areas in Brooklyn, I can assist you if time allows. Feel free to shoot me a PM before hand.

edit: You mentioned Secaucus NJ. I personally wouldnt consider any places outside of the 5 boroughs of NYC. It is too inconvenient to travel between NJ and NYC for work and other duties ( im sure when you want to have some enjoyment, you would have to travel to NYC to pursue it).

honestly stay in the city, williamsburg is nice but it has its ghetto side (North side) and its chic expensive hippie side south (by bedford ave).

Hit me up ill give you the low down on all the hoods suggested. Coming from your hood in FL it could vary how you feel comfortable in some of these suggested.

**** i live in queens less than 10 miles from where i work and it takes me 1 hour , 1 hour + to get to and from. Hoboken is cool but the PATH sucks! so be wary.


NYC girls are harder to bag, you really gotta have swagger, NJ girls are a lot easier, FYI.

Looking for asian girls hit up FLUSHING QUEENS, you will have your choice of every asian variety out there (and sars), thats where i picked up mines (2/3 Filipina 1/3 chinese) am loving it, JDM wife.

I recommended staying in Manhattan if you can, but Hoboken in a viable option since the Path runs right up to 6th Ave and 34th St.

EDIT: Should have been more specific regarding neighborhoods. I am from Village/Union Square area and love it here. Soho is OK too, but a little too expensive at times. East Village is by far the best for wining and dining on every different type of food you can image for a song. Many other neighborhoods are most expensive. If you want to be closer to work, I would recommend Hells Kitchen over midtown east (aka Murray Hill). Murray Hill is uber lame and dull.

Secaucus is a great place to live.

VERY easy to commute anywhere, the people here are nice, living costs is cheap and the houses are rather nice.

Not to mention we have all the necessities here. Walmart, bestbuy, dunkin donuts, pharmacy, fruit/veggie store. All within a 1/2 mile radius.

Obviously, you would want to hit up the NYC/hoboken for social life anyway but that shouldnt stop you from putting secaucus in your options.

I've never hung out in my town lol. Who does that anyway?

Still a great place to live. We were voted #11 best place to live in NJ. Zero crime and zero gangs here

You have the best access to transportation to the city than any other Borough and its most convenient to live. With your budget of $1750 you can find plenty places. I use to work at a real states company and my old boss usually has open apartments. Shoot me a PM and i will give you that info.
