Cool Kearney, so-so.

I sold a car to a friend of mine back in april. I had the engine rebuilt by Kevin landers and broke it in personally. I told him I would perform any repairs he needed done to the car at a much cheaper rate.

I ended up helping him swap out a rear caliper and pads, shifter bushings, as well as a new high flow cat, and a coolant leak, just wear/tear items on a car with almost 200k on it.

Well clutch time comes around and he purchases a S/S kit from mazdatrix. At this point I don't have alot of time to spare with a 10 month old at home and a salaried work week. I saw the good reviews from Kearney put up by a few forum members and decided to recommend that he take his car there.

Well his total list of items that need to be repaired were clutch, install a Walbro, and fix a trans seal that was causing fluid to leak onto the cat. Well the flywheel was cracked, no big deal get a used one (50 is fair market for a stock used n/a clutch) and resurface it (another 25). No, they charge him $200 for a USED flywheel, well this got me fuming a bit. Next they go on to tell him that they've never seen a fuel pump fail and that it shouldn't need to be replaced. Now the car is stalling on hard left hand turns, a sure sign of the fuel sock and pump being gummed up after 200k miles. So I recommended he get an 89 dollar walbro with a brand new sock, takes all of an hour to upgrade and is a good idea for a street ported s5 n/a car with intake and exhaust upgrades.

Well I talk to him today just to find out what they charged him total (to see if I was going to recommend them to anyone else). The total was 999.30. WTF. A clutch job turns from 350, a fair price indeed for the labor, to 550, for a used flywheel as well. It turns out the other 450 of the cost was for a new Master and slave cylinder ( fluids, more labor also), which were replaced because the old stuff was adjusted so far out of spec that it wasn't disengaging the clutch fully. Fair enough, but wtf kinda profit are you going to turn on a clutch plate like that? 150% profit on a used part? **** you can buy an ACT Streetlite for 219 off ebay from a reputable seller.

In conclusion, would I recommend them again? Yes, because they did excellent labor work, but buy your parts elsewhere.

As someone that runs a shop. The mark up was a little high, but not totally out of realm.....

Man, that's a bit high, but I just left there last weekand for what they do you can't beat 'em! I went in get my carb put on and what ever Linda found that might have been wrong she called me to let me know and did a couple of things that I didn't even ask about. Was your friend's car a black 'vert by chance? I saw that there.
