yeah go with a S5 TII , just save yourself alot of troubles and buy a low miles bone stock one that no one has hacked up with ricer mods and what not. Way more power then a 1st gen if thats what your looking for.

when it comes to ease and price to work on...i would suggest an FC....there easy to work on....there modern enough that as long as you understand basics about cars you should be fine....and the parts come cheap and easy
that plus since the FB's vary from year to year, if you dont do your reading you might run into alot of problems...especially with prices on simple items....if i remeber correctly some FB's have the type of front (or rear) brakes that when you change them, the whole hub comes out with as one unit, some have drums in the rear, most FB's have a steering box and not rack and pinion...which for newbs is a pain, most are carb'ed which again for newbs...and young people is a major no no.
if your looking for a car for power..get what 13bturbofc said....they are the most powerful of all the versions of FC's and especially FB's
but if your looking for something simple, fun, easy to work on, and most reliable....i suggest getting an s4 or s5 n/a(but the s4's are even easier)
as long as you give the n/a engines fuel, air, and spark, in the right amounts there almost bullet proof....i would know...
my s4 n/a may not be the most powerful but it still has the original factory engine with great compression for 20 somthing odd years and has a little less then 200k miles on it and still running strong(i would love to see the turbos pull that off, lol)
so now you tell us, what kind of experiences do you have with cars in general, and what are you looking for with one of these cars

seeing as how this is your first car, I would probably get an non-turbo second gen. They're fast, decently reliable and cheap (much more so than the turbos on both counts), but they're still a good bit newer than the first gens so will have less things wrong with them most likely.
They're fast compared to most civics and stuff (and first gens), and their rear wheel drive. they'll make a good first car.
my official recommendation would be an 86-88 non-turbo (GTU or GXL). you can always swap a turbo engine into it later if you want.

well rested,buffet o food
Get a second gen, eage8 hit the nail right on the head. s4 na's are definately cheap and parts are readly available. Check compression and drive the car prior to purchasing.
I think aaroncakes website has a nice "what to look for when purchasing an rx7" tutorial.
Good luck, and welcome to rx7 hell.
