There are companies in Alabama that provide lost title services. You technically "Sell your car" to their company, they create a title under the alabama DMV and then "Sell the car" back to you with a legitimate AL Title.
Here is the name of the company... They can do cars up to 1974, but they will be able to do cars through 1990 soon, you might be able to find out how soon if you contact them. There maybe other companies out there that already have that ability so just poke around google.

I don't know of anyway to do it in maryland other then finding the owner of the vehicle and getting them to apply for a duplicate title. (Or doing some create VIN switching).
