i have a 1989 rx-7 and it won't start.
i was driving it one day and the next thing i knew it wouldn't start. it would try to turn over, but it won't do any thing. i took out the spark plugs and they were full of chunky oil(i had to burn away the oil with a lighter) ,i just bought the new spark plugs a week before this "problem" from mazda.

and now the car has been sitting for about 3 week(it breaks your heart, i know) so now the battery is dead, and i'm fustrated.

i will list what i did, but it still didn't start:
- jumped the battery with my other car
- cleaned the spark plugs
- replaced the spark plug wires(while trying to to get it started)
- i cleaned the battery terminals, just in case
- i checked if the plugs get electricty (and they do)
- i throught it was flooded so i did every thing they usually do when the rx-7 is flooded(except the automatic tranmission fluid trick)
-i'm out of option on my end.... HELP!

any help would be greatly appriciated.

 

Did you crank it over for 5 X 15 sec intervals each, with the plugs out, and w/ the fuel pump disabled? (dunno about FCs if they have a fuel pump fuse you can pull)? Because you need to unflood the engine itself from all the leftover gas, not just replace the plugs, cuz they'll just be re-fouled if the gas (not oil ) is still there in the engine.

Oh and is she a manual? Because honestly, IMO, the absolute easiest way to get her started in the shortest and least teadious manner is to simply push-start her.

 

pull the 2 EGI fuzes, crank for 15 sec, pop them back in - if it is flooded, should start right up

 

I wouldn't try cranking less than 3 X for 15 sec a piece. 5 X for 15 sec never fails...esp. if it's flooded badly. You can also spray WD-40, since it acts like a detergent, and will break up the gasoline, helping you unflood it.

yea i tried to crank it over for 5 times for 15 seconds with the spark plugs out(made a mess) and with the fuel pump fuse pulled, it still wouldn't start. but i will try the WD-40 trick tommorrow, and if it doesn't work i will be back here.

but, just in case it doesn't work what should i do next?

 

Spray first, pull plugs, pull fuse, crank. Attach a battery charger to the battery, cuz this WILL drain your battery. Give it a good 15 seconds. 5 to even 8 times if necessary (sounds like she's flooded pretty bad). Put the plugs back in, spray WD-40 AGAIN (about 4 - 5 sec solid), and then try cranking (do NOT touch the gas pedal at all...or even hold the gas pedal to the floor completely, which stops the fuel pump). She should start.

Heck, I've had FD's (not my own, but others) actually START ON ME w/ the fuel pump fuse pulled. The car started and ran for a few seconds until I actually killed the ignition. That's how much fuel it had in it. Pretty damn bad.

If this doesn't work, seriously man, get 2 buddies to push the car, and pop the clutch. She'll start right up. End of story.

i tried it and it still didn't start.

i changed the oil and i smell is gas in it. i dont know if thats normal,

i think the car is really-REALLY badly flooded. some one told me about draining the fuel rail? what do you guys think?

he's right, what you're gonna want to do is push it and pop start it if you need further guidance on pop starting let me know

mine sat for around 4 weeks and it wouldnt start, we pushed it around with my buddies' neon and i popped it a couple times, it took 3 times to get it to stay running, it'll smoke like crazy at first but it'll straighten back out then

mines an 10ae so it's not uncommon for it to flood

 

one thing nobody has mentioned, you might have to do this more than once...Almost every single time my FC acted up like that it took me a good half hour of dancing around pulling relays and cranking it for it to get going...
Heres another cute little tip, eventhough you have brand new plugs they will foul up on you if you flood it while trying to start it! And it will not start, period! ive never been able to get fouled plugs to work again(even when i let them sit for a week hoping the gas would evaporate - and i know a week was overkill and i tried them on a unflooded car!).
As long as youre pulling the plugs out, might as well listen for the 3 even pst, pst, pst to make sure its not blown...last year we were stuck thinking one of our local FDs was just flooded and it turned out to be a blown engine(just make sure you do one rotor at a time).
