"Pumping" accelerator to start 13B?

1984 GSL-SE. Bought it two weeks ago. Previous owner says he has to pump the accelerator 3 times, turn the key, and pump it again and repeat to start the car. I can understand this with respect to a car with carburetors, but fuel injection? I was told the fuel pump is new, gas tank good, and fuel lines new as well. What else could cause the problem? If I did that with the 86 I had, plugs fouled so I never pumped the accelerator to start it and it was fine. Thanks for the help.

Could be leaky injectors or a bad FPR

Vacuum leak could be a possibility

Does it smoke when it starts? If so i would check the above, if not, i would wonder about the cold start assist not working right

touching the gas once, will set the fast idle stuff, but other than that pumping the gas with the key off does nothing. i'm pretty sure that pumping the gas with the key on does next to nothing as well.

if he's opening the throttle while its cranking, then it may be flooding or nearly so. things to check are vacuum leaks, usually at the lower intake gasket. leaky injectors, or a bad/slow coolant temp sensor. and this is AFTER you've changed all the plugs/filters, and set the tps and idle speed/mixtures to spec

No smoke. I have new plugs, cap, rotor, you name it. Got my work cut out for me but this will help.

It started for me

I drove it after it was warm. Come to think of it, I'm not sure. Maybe it was still running and I jumped in to move it (stored at a friend's house). Now I'm not really sure. Supposed to have an Atkins rebuilt motor and cleaned fuel injectors. I may go up and try to start it this weekend. Still got to get used to the long clutch and super tall shifter
