Dude, some of those welds are brutal. Particularly the welds at the flange and the collector. Make sure to grind down all welding surfaces to fresh material.

Sorry for lack of updates. I have been very busy with exams and my 21st birthday party etc so havent been able to work on car. Friends actually got me a great birthday present, a haynes manual for my FB. I don't know how they tracked one down in South Africa these cars are very rare here. I have just been paid and I got some cash for my birthday too so i'm going to start getting this exhaust done as soon as I finish exams on wednesday. I'm going to start ordering some parts so long. Im getting some gauges (oil temp, oil pressure, water temp) so I can fill that gap in my centre console and get some more accurate readings on what my engine's doing. Also getting a 3 3/4" 10k rpm Tachometer as I know the stock one is a few hundred revs out of synch with what the engine is actually at (I know this from comparing it to what the megasquirt reads) and the stock one only goes to 8000rpm which just isnt enough . Getting some exhaust wrap at the same time to keep the heat down under the hood. Once I have the header wrapped up I need to get it on the car, this right-hand drive steering box is going to make that a nightmare, I have a feeling one the bolts has a stripped head. Im considering undoing the engine mounts and putting a jack under the engine to lift it up, hopefully I can get enough clearance then to get the header on without having to take the steering box out . I'm still struggling to find a megaphone so I may have to make my own.

you might want to try one of my expansion chamber mid pipes you wont have room for a pre silencer but with a strait through muffler 16-18 at the rear exhaust usually db test between 96-99db.we get gains of 4-7% on stock port motors and 7-11% on ported ones in testing with a much wider power band the big street port 6ports make power from 7-11k and look to go higher(no one has run with it on the dyno to 12k yet to find out where the drop off point is with the pipe) drop me a email if intrested

will you ever show us dyno proof of that ? I'd be interested if I saw dyno sheets and maybe a picture of the actual product. How long is this chamber anyways?

i will work on dyno sheets but since all of the cars are scca race car most guy dont want to show what they are actually making to the general public(in fact one customer has deleted all of his high hp runs out of the computer so as to make other area racers think he is making 20hp less than he really is) i was testing this pipe for over 2 1/2 years before i even talked about it on here.as for lenght its big need to clearance the floor on the passenger side of the tunnel if you have a racing beat road race header the pipe install lenght is to right before the floor ends for the rear wheel well.

Have you got any pics of that expansion chamber or you worried we will just copy it? . Anyways I finally got the exhaust done. I managed to squeeze the header in there by jacking the engine up off its mounts and by loosening the steering box. Took me the better part of a day to get that right with the help of a friend . Then had the rx-7 towed on the back of a truck to the exhaust shop. They rolled me a megaphone there and actually got me quite a nice 3" stainless muffler/pre-silencer. Its supposed to be their high temperature model so we will see how it goes. I supervised them to make sure they weren't doing a half-assed job. They fitted the megaphone to the back of the collecter and installed the O2 sensor bung in it aswell. Then came the pre-silencer and after it a slight bend to join up with the rest of the exhaust system. All looks good, and I was also happy to see that my header has no leaks . Car sounds a little quieter but is still very loud (not that im worried) but it does sound a lot cleaner without that perforated tube knocking around inside the muffler. I must get a hold of this elusive header wrap now and get it wrapped up before I start tuning again so I can see the power improvements. The header is emitting a lot of heat now and its close to my steering box, gearbox etc. so I don't want to drive it until I have the wrap. Theres actually a street to strip drag racing event at the track this weekend so hopefully I will be happy enough with my tune by then to check what time a can put down on the quartermile.

Car is running well. Still needs some fine tuning. I'm not driving it much at the moment though because im busy trying to get the car licensed and insured etc. A bit risky driving an unlicensed, non insured car . I'll let you know when the car is 100% done and I have her on the dyno again.

Good luck with your project, what porting/setup are you running?

if you have problems with the acc pump being to rich at low rpm there is an option of setting acc enrichment vs engine rpm i use this on a cammed up 20v toyota with itbs rev 9000rpm and it really cleaned up my low rmp just off idle revs by turning off the acc pump i.e. pump value 0 worked great .

also your timing is way low try running 24-26 for drag race use high octain we run as high as 28-32 dont try that on street fuel also what is your leading to trailing split ?there is power to be found they if you can play with it on a dyno change is toooo small to feel on the street but can be found on the dyno.timing curve changes with my pipe made gains of 4-8 hp and changes in timing split gain an additional 4-6 on top of that it will take time. my friends car had over 6 hr on the dyno making very small changes to find the sweet spot for the tune
