SD Salvage Title Question

Has anyone here ever taken a vehicle with a Salvage Title and had it inspected and registered in South Dakota? What/how did they inspect the vehicle? How easy or difficult was the process? From what I have researched so far, the vehicle needs to be inspected by the State Highway Patrol. I'm going to ask about it at the Treasury Office this coming Monday. I'll ask a Trooper next time I see one at work. Anyone with any insight please chime in. Don't respond if you are going to say "Don't buy vehicle with Salvage title..."

Thanks in advance.

The state laws here are so laid back when it comes to things like that its just plain stupid. I have never done it before, but honestly I don't think there is anything to it. I know there are a few shops in Sioux Falls that make a living off of buying wrecked cars, fixing them and selling them. If a state trooper or someone wants to look at it, they are probably going to just make sure it looks straight and tell you its fine. I would be surprised if they even look at it. Your not going to have any trouble getting it registered.

edit:
Your a West River guy huh? Air Force?

If you have it inspected and registered as a rebuilt title you dont have to go through the inspection process again if you move to a diffrent state. I think a body shop has to sign off on the car though. Every state is diffrent when it comes to that stuff.

I got out of the Air Force 2 years ago. I work for the Pennington County Sheriff's Office now.

From what I read, there isn't much paperwork involved with the process, but I wasn't sure what the inspection process was about. Its not a car I'm looking to get, its a motorcycle. The ignition switch is busted and it has some cosmetic damage from being knocked over when it was stolen. It has a salvage title but and isn't listed as stolen anymore.

It depends on the age as well. If its old enough you wont even need an inspection. If its a newer sport bike your going to have to jump through some hoops to do it.

Figured I'd add some follow up in case anyone was interested.

I took the title to the court house to have it transfered to my name and to register the motorcycle. I pointed out the fact that it was a South Dakota Title, but marked salvage through the state of Kansas. When I showed this to the lady behind the counter, she said "yep, it says salvage." She calculated the tax for the purchase of the vehicle and the cost of registration and gave me a new license plate for the motorcycle. No questions asked, no inspection required.
