Gateway 2007: Everything You Need To Know!
The following is the first look at the 2007 Gateway International Raceway Drag Racing Format and Schedule by anybody, anywhere.
You're welcome.
More racing, more race dates, and more diversity mark the 2007 Season at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois. Among the changes are an exciting new sportsman drag racing series, an expanded Street Car Shootout Series, more sportsman bracket races, and a revised Midnight Madness program. Additionally, GIR still retains some of the most prestigious major championships in drag racing.
Here’s what’s new and what’s not:
Tuesday Street Car Shootout Series Events
The 2007 Street Car Shootout Series will be expanded to twenty-seven events. Open test-and-tune action will be complimented by the popular SX Performance SCSS program in which the sixteen quickest entries (based on elapsed time) earn “Fastest Street Car Qualifier” decals.
Beginning in 2007, the FOUR quickest overall qualifiers will compete in heads-up eliminations for trophies. Also, the structure of the SCSS Season Point Championship has been revised to award one point to each driver qualifying in the Super Sixteen field at each event as well as one bonus point awarded to each driver qualifying in the top four positions each week.
The SCSS will again feature three categories including the Street Car Shootout, (for the four quickest entries regardless of configuration), the Sport Tuner Shootout, (for all passenger cars except Rear-Wheel-Drive 8-cylinder or 6-cylinder vehicles), and the Super Truck Showdown, (for all utility vehicles). In the Sport Tuner Shootout and in the Super Truck Showdown, the two quickest qualifiers in each category will compete in heads-up eliminations for trophies.
Each week, all finalists in all three categories will receive one free car and driver admission to the SCSS series, (to be used during the 2007 season).
For the second consecutive year, High School Eliminator bracket racing program will be contested on Tuesday nights during the months of June, July and August. The High School Eliminator championship is open to all High School students possessing valid High School identification and parental consent, if required. The program is sanctioned by the National Hot Rod Association with a point series determining a season champion and series finalists are eligible to compete in Indianapolis, Indiana at the NHRA Division III Sportsman Finals in September. High School Eliminator vehicles may not run quicker than 12.00 seconds per NHRA rules.
Gates open at 5 PM with racing until 10 PM. SCSS qualifying takes place from 6:30 PM until 9 PM. The semi-finals of the Street Car Shootout will commence at 9:20 PM with the final rounds in all three divisions at 9:45 PM.
Wednesday Test-N-Tune Events
The Gateway Test-N-Tune program begins its forty-first year with no changes to the traditional Wednesday program. Open timed trials are available for cars with purpose-only racing tires (slicks and drag radials) and all street or strip motorcycles. Gates open at 5 PM with timed trials until 10 PM.
Friday Night Super Series
For 2007, Gateway International Raceway will host a new drag racing series on seven selected Friday evenings featuring two radical new categories of competition. The event dates for the new Super Series are April 6, May 18, June 15, June 22, July 6, July 27, and August 10.
Super Stick Eliminator will include all manually-shifted automobiles in a bracket racing format with a purse of 100% of the entry fees. Any automobile utilizing a manual transmission, (of any kind), will be permitted. The entry fee will be $20.
The Supercharged Showdown will include all supercharged and/or turbocharged automobiles in a bracket racing format with a purse of 100% of the entry fees. Any automobile utilizing forced induction, including but not limited to Roots, Screw or centrifugal superchargers and any turbocharger, (of any kind), will be permitted. The entry fee will be $20.
The extremely popular GIR Junior Dragster program will conduct its series point races during the Friday events, as well. Gates open at 4:30 PM.
Midnight Madness Series
The Midnight Madness program will once again include seven events from April through September. Open all cars and motorcycles, MM events are conducted on Friday nights with gates opening at 8 PM and racing continuing until 3 AM.
For 2007, Midnight Madness events will feature an “Instant Green” starting system with no times displayed on the scoreboards. On four of the seven Friday nights, the GIR Junior Dragster program will be contested from 4:30 PM until 8 PM.
Open Test-n-Tune Events
Along with the scheduled Tuesday SCSS and Wednesday Slicks-n-Bikes programs, Gateway International Raceway will also host two Test-n-Tune events, (open to all vehicles), to begin the season on Saturday, March 17 and Saturday, March 24. Gates open at 8 AM with racing until 5 PM.
Saturday Bracket Racing Series
Gateway continues the nation’s richest weekly bracket racing series with thirteen point-earning events and three open competition meets. Each event includes competition in Pro Motorcycle, Street Motorcycle, Super Pro, Cash Bash (1/8th mile), Pro, and Street
Eliminators. Gates open at 12 noon.
Major Championship Events
The 2007 season includes the return of the Flowmaster American Drag Racing League’s Gateway Drags Outlaw Pro Modified Nationals, the NHRA Division 3/5 National Open, The Screamin’ Eagle All-Harley Drag Racing Association Nationals, the Number One Parts, Incorporated (NOPI) National Drag Racing Association Sport Compact Nationals, Monster MoPar Weekend XXIII, the United Black Drag Racers Association “Black Sunday Weekend XIII”, the NHRA Division 3 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, two MegaBucks bracket races, and a new major bracket race hosted by the DragRacingResults.com national series. The premiere event on the GIR schedule, the National Hot Rod Association O’Reilly Midwest Nationals, has been moved to May 4-6 for 2007.
Gateway Drag Racing School
For the eleventh consecutive year, GIR will offer a free Drag Racing School comprised of five seminars which cover every facet of street car racing and bracket racing. The classes are open to every racer, crew member, spouse, child, significant other, friend of a friend, or housepet. GIR’s Drag Racing School conducts classes on the first Thursday of each month from May through September. The dates for the 2007 GIR Drag Racing School are May 3, June 7, July 5, August 2, September 6. No fees or registration are required. Classes begin at 7 PM and conclude by 10 PM.
Closed Dates
As in the past, there are several dates on the calender throughout the actual racing season during which Gateway International Raceway will be closed. In 2007, those dates will be:
May 1 (Tuesday), May 2 (Wednesday):
Closed due to preparations for NHRA O’Reilly Midwest Nationals
July 17 (Tuesday), July 18 (Wednesday), July 20 (Friday), and July 21(Saturday):
Closed due to reconfiguring for NASCAR/Busch stock car event on oval track
August 28 (Tuesday), August 29 (Wednesday), August 31 (Friday), and September 1 (Saturday):
Closed due to reconfiguring for NASCAR/Craftsman Truck event on oval track.

The classes are open to every racer, crew member, spouse, child, significant other, friend of a friend, or housepet. GIR’s Drag Racing School conducts classes on the first Thursday of each month from May through September. The dates for the 2007 GIR Drag Racing School are May 3, June 7, July 5, August 2, September 6. No fees or registration are required. Classes begin at 7 PM and conclude by 10 PM.
Closed Dates
As in the past, there are several dates on the calender throughout the actual racing season during which Gateway International Raceway will be closed. In 2007, those dates will be:
May 1 (Tuesday), May 2 (Wednesday):
Closed due to preparations for NHRA O’Reilly Midwest Nationals
July 17 (Tuesday), July 18 (Wednesday), July 20 (Friday), and July 21(Saturday):
Closed due to reconfiguring for NASCAR/Busch stock car event on oval track
August 28 (Tuesday), August 29 (Wednesday), August 31 (Friday), and September 1 (Saturday):
Closed due to reconfiguring for NASCAR/Craftsman Truck event on oval track.
