to assign a port plug in the 9-pin -to- USB(or whatever you have)
adapter, then:
1: go to the start menu, right click on my computer, click properties.
2: go to "hardware" tab, click device manager button
3: click the drop down menu next to "ports", right click on it and hit properties
4:click port settings tab, go to advanced.
5:you should see a COM port drop down menu, change it to com port number 1.

Now when you open the microtech software, you can press "F1" to connect to the ECU.

For any one looking, I have 10 Microtech Laptop adapter kits on the shelf.
kit includes: Laptop adapter, 6 foot long data cable, Cd-rom software. Price is $125.00 delivered (plus 3 % if paying thru paypal) Lower 48 states. Hawaii/Alaska/Int. will obviously be more exspensive for shipping

Would a desk-top computer be the same thing as a lap-top? Do you still need the lap top adapter or could you use the cable for the hand controller?

If you have that little understanding of computers, then you should not even try to tune the car yourself, with or without a PC!

You can use the cable for the hand controller without the adapter, you need the adapter to hook it up to a computer....bottom line.
