Hyperterminal Frustration

So I finally got a MS2 v3. I had to get an old computer w/db9 cable so I wouldn't have the frustration of the usb->serial adapter. I had to buy an external floppy drive to UPLOAD the necessary files on the OLD laptop (this old thing has windows 98 on it) I'm now having problems with step 26 of the megamanual where it says to jumper pins 2&3, plug it in, boot up hyperterminal, set all the settings and key in stuff. I'm pretty much computer illiterate, but now that I'm *** deep in this project, there's no turning back. Can someone help me decipher what all this means? Just step 26 for the V3. I'm just not seeing what I'm supposed to be accomplishing here.

That step is to test the serial chip on the board. It should echo back what you type.

What part of the instructions do you need help with?

Well, I got it figured out. I put in all the inputs (comm1, baud rate, etc) and I couldn't get anything to echo back. I couldn't even type anything except the letter a. I tried going back over the steps, but when I read something about "clicking on the red telephone," then didn't even see one I gave up. My brother's good with this kind of stuff, I'm not. Thanks though, I'll probably be back for more help.
