Megasquirt how much
I'm just quoting prices from www.diyautotune.com here:
MS1 PCB3 Kit Built $329 USD
MS2 PCB3 Kit Built $410 USD
MS2 PCB3 Kit Unassembled $247
12' Wiring Harness $65 USD
There would be shipping on top of that..
Personally I would recommend buying the harness. I didn't and I have ended up with quite a mess of wiring in my car :P Of course if you have a system to wiring and making all the wires the right length and you enjoy soldering onto DB connectors... go for it

I was reading the FAQs and I was not sure which MS unit I should get:
If I buy a pre-made kit, which one would be best?
I was thinking this one, but it's the MSII (with the daughterboard mentioned above):

But then, i read this on their site:
so, I don't know what info is more up to date. I found the new firmware but I don't know if it will help
https://www.rx7club.com/megasquirt-forum-153/firmware-493533/
I'll continue my reading but I'd like to know if I will have to modify anything on this pre-built unit.

^^last modified in '06 so I don't know if this is for MSI or MSII
I don't really mind having to, but I'd rather not slow down the project any more.

Spark advance table can have different rpm and kpa bins than VE and AFR tables.
Already there are optional firmware updates (like MS2-Extra ) for the MegaSquirt-II to add features such as:
* Wheel decoding for a stack of different ignition system trigger wheels

The megasquirt2 daughter board can also be referred to as the MS2 CPU.. it does all the processing and can be install in place of the MSI chip on the board.
Basically if you get a Megasquirt II Kit, which is a PCB3.0 (good because it has a prototype area which you can build extra bits onto), and the MS2 CPU, and run the MS2Extra Firmware, with a few modifications to the board, you will be able to use a stock crank angle sensor to feed the tach signal into the MS.
I put together a guide on doing rotary with MS2 so give that a read and then shoot us some more questions
http://stuff.pw.cx/Megasquirt%20MS2%...azda%20CAS.pdf
So to directly answer your existing questions:
1. Buy MS2 kit. The one you have shown is a different pcb, i think optimised for computerised manufacture and doesnt appear to have a proto area where youd want to build the extra VR circuit... thats something to keep in mind.
2. The latest stable version of the MS2Extra firmware is 1.0.2 - apparently 2.0 is nearly here with even more features
3. my mate built the whole megasquirt in a weekend.. so you could probably do the same.. someone else may have a view on that preassembled kit and board... ive never seen one before.

I agree with H4. I built my own v3 board and did the mods to it so I can use the stock CAS. I built it several months ago with the MS1 chip, but I will be upgrading to MS2 so I can take advantage of some extra features. And definitely get the wiring harness from DIY. I have it and it sure simplifies things. Well worth the extra dough.
lots of work. Thanks for the PDF, I saved it for future reference.
Looks like I have to choose:
http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/m...unit-p-65.html
OR
http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/m...ase-p-119.html
I have done some electrical work before but nothing like this so I don't know how difficult it will be.
I have a lot of reading and researching to do still so I don't have any GOOD questions yet. If I come across anything that I don't get i'll post in here again. Thanks for the info and if you can think of anything that would be helpful just let me know please.

Yes either of those kits should be fine for you. The best way to learn is to really thoroughly go through all the information on www.megasquirt.info and get a grasp of how it works basically...
building the ecu yourself may actually help you increase your understanding of how it works too.. the build guide is a thoroughly documented step by step process - see it on the ms site under v3 assembly i think.
Good luck mate

I was able to reuse the stock emissions harness, it wasnt all that hard, although i did canniballize the stock ECU for connectors to the other harnesses. The worst bit was how old and corroded the wires were near the ends, made it impossible to solder them to the db37 until they were almost spotlessly clean... which took forever.
