Question car wont start when trailing coilpack plugged in

Hi,

Been a while since posting here but I have finally finished my loom for mega and the ignition and got the coils mounted nicely!!

I'm running MS2Extra 1 firmware.
I've added a second VR circuit to my 3.0 board.
I'm running from a standard CAS.
I'm using standard FC coilpacks.

I cannot get the car to start when cranking it while the trailing coilpack is plugged in. It sounds like its getting close to starting, but it wont. If I unplug the trailing coilpack, it will start easily - no problems.

I have checked spark and it is happening on both leading plugs - didnt test trailing. Something I observed is that rotor1 sparks twice as much as rotor2 - this COULD be a limitation of my timing light.

The funny thing is that once the car is running, I can plug in the trailing coilpack and everything is fine - and it is sparking, into the housings... all good.

Any thoughts would be sweet

TIA

Paul.

You could try changing your cranking ignition timing, or changing your cranking pulse-width a little higher.

I've never experienced this problem before though.

Oh something I should add - if I plug the trailing coilpack into external plugs earthed to the chassis, it is still unable to start.... Any thoughts?

I'll have a browse through all the settings tomorrow Thanks Ken

whats your split map like paul? your trailings could be trying to kick your engine backwards or something because the timing is way out? mine starts fine.. although I've noticed sometimes when starting that I get a few 'kicks' which feel like attempts to spin backwards.

hey ben, it cant be that because even with the plugs not connected it wont start.. i reckon it has to be power related.. both coils running off the same supply isn't happening.. i'm going to fix that up as soon as its not freezing outside

split table for reference:

if i start the car on the leading pack only, i can then plug in the trailing pack and it continues to run nice- in fact feels even smoother testing with sparks external to the engine- they both fire too.. so its all happening...

paul, your wiring is 'intercoursed'

I wonder if the trailing coils are causing some kind of interferance.

The fact that taking firing them at all, whether in the engine or not causes a problem makes me suspect either your engine->chassis ground, or your VR wiring.

Split timing doesn't matter on crank... on crank it will always fire with 0 split.

Hmm what sort of interference? I can see when I'm cranking the rpm is ticking over at about 150, so it isn't interfering with the CAS inputs..

Is it possible I have mounted something too close to something else?

Ben- we setup ours the same didn't we? And you have no problems starting it with both coils plugged in?

I'll get the mega out and photograph/inspect the circuit this evening.

Paul.

I'm driving the car to work every day and its fine, the only problem I have with the trailing pack connected is that sometimes the engine tries to fire backwards which feels really rough and must be killer on the starter motor. Only seems to do that when its cold. Just run a big thick 12v cable to the coils and see if that makes a difference.

150 seems low for crank... does it just stay at 150, or does it update really often hanging around 150...

If it just goes to 150 then seems to just stay at 150, most likely you're briefly losing sync due to noise.

In any case, all the rx7's I run MS1/extra and MS2/extra on crank closer to 300 RPM.

Hmm my battery is near death... that could be the cranking issue.

The value changes often and is around 150... I think I'll order a new battery actually, that could be causing some probs..
