adjusting timing for the first time

What mark should I be setting it too. My pulley no longer has colours on it . From front of the car I setting to the one on the left. I thought I saw somewhere you have to change base timing in ms to -5 deg set timing to mark then return to -10 deg. Does this sound right. Any info would be great. Also it is hard to set timing on lumpy idle. (half Bridge!!!!!)

you don't have to do it on idle... you can set it anywhere as long as you have the fixed angle at -5.

Also, you want the mark to the right when you're facing the engine.

no. Change it back to -10 after you set it... otherwise it won't use the ignition table for spark, and will run at -5 all the time.
