Smile 2nd VR Circuit build on a V3 MS Board

Ben and I today modified his MS2/3.0 with the additional VR circuit. See diagram below of how we lay out the components:

There is probably a neater way of doing it, but we found this to keep things quite together and compact.. We haven't tested it yet, as Ben had to rush off to work at half an hours notice, so if you can see any problems, please let me know... following other information we've collected, I'm pretty sure its right though.

The reason we cut Pin 4 is so that we can bring the ground connection out to the 2 caps and 2 resistors on the right without having to use any insulated cable to jump the pin.

I'd appreciate it if someone could check over this, if it looks good, I'll make a diagram which is flipped giving the 'underside' view, so it's easier to run the tracks required without having to flip it in your mind and mess up

Cheers,

Paul.

- blue is on the underside of the board
- red is either on top, or a jumper underneath
- white is the components and labels

Unconfirmed as of yet.. We modded Ben's board but are still not sure on some things, so we have inconclusive results at this stage. I just need to pass my EPA test and then I'll do the mod - i don't want to kill the mega somehow and not be able to make the test and then get fined and have my rego cancelled :P

OK It is now confirmed that this works - at least on the bench. More details to come.

We setup Bens megasquirt with this circuit and in testing his is sparking as well now on both coils I am modding my megasquirt today so I will be adding more detail to the guide shortly, and then finally get onto the software settings side of things to add into the guide + setup a website with a collection of maps people have their rotary's running on.

Mega mods complete. Just need to mod the harness, mount the coils and should be all good... that said i have a lot of work on this weekend so might be another week :S

If you'd like to do some reading, here is my guide so far for MS2Extra V3 with stock unmodified CAS:
http://stuff.pw.cx/Megasquirt%20MS2%...azda%20CAS.pdf

I am updating this as I go... every few days... It is not officially complete yet, and not necessarily all correct - so if you spot anything you are not sure on, let me know and we will try to clarify it

Cheers,

Paul.

Yea see the guide, its full of hi res 600dpi photos... should be able to zoom in a fair bit on them

When I made the circuit, I used the diagrams in there, although I did flip the diagram in photoshop so that I could check the underside of the board easily. This is just for if you hold the shorter ends and flip it over the long edge.. worth double checking.

Awesome, i like the pdf file! I did see a few things that I did different. For starters I used pin 25 for G+ and G- went to MS ground, you used pin 31 and 36. My pin 31 is the trigger for leading coil pack and my pin 36 isn't being used. I guess it's all how we wired it up internally?

Other than that I think you are setting a standard for the MS builders in the RX-7 community!

Absolutely - the pins on the db37 connector entirely depend upon how you have jumpered the actual inputs and outputs internally.

I've got to add a CAS install guide, how to line it up and get it running section as well... Handily I am at this stage on my car, so it makes it easy to write on

Thanks- i wanted a guide that would make it easier for people to consider using MS, as it is an affordable EFI solution, just I have found it pretty challenging to get up and running - pretty hard to find the information I was after.. but slowly getting there

Cheers!

Paul.

Absolutely! Please let me know if you think there are any little extra bits of info that I could include so that the guide is more versatile in helping people out, rather than being limited to quite a specific setup.

Also I wasnt sure if the pulley marks on the 12A are the same as 13B? L at 5ATDC? That would be worth noting.

Cheers,

Paul.

There are some things in there that you might want to include for the ms1 users, as the ms2 isn't as widely used on the rx7 yet.

I have a question concerning grounds, when I bought the premade cable through DIY, most of the stuff is pretty much the same, but the grounds on there are totally different. Would I be able to leave them in, and add the other grounds? Or do I have to disconnect the other grounds, and ground them as said in here?

also just double checking, but pin # 7 would be the tach pin correct? As in it would be the one that needs to be a shielded wire?

I would ground as the pdf says... the grounding on the premade harnesses is usually insufficient for it to work well with a VR sensor.

pin24 is the VR+

pin7 is a ground, which can be used for VR-

where and how is the tach hooked up too then?

Also back to the ground, so can I still leave the ones in there and add the other ones? There are like 8 pins grounded though.

The tach is driven by the trailing coils on the 2nd gen.
