My 97 Supra vs Cousin’s 93 RX7

Hey guys, just thought I would share my first race with the new car. Last Thursday I purchased my 1997 limited edition Supra twin turbo. The car is completely stock but I am enjoying every minute of it. It took many years and some hard work to get my dream car but I now own it.

Tonight I ran my cousin’s 1993 RX7. We thought it would be fun to see the outcome of these 2 beautiful JDM super cars. His only mods are an HKS exhaust and HKS down pipe. We ran twice off a 1st gear roll. We both go and I shift in to 2nd and he is already pulling, then I shift in to 3rd and his rear bumper is at my front bumper. We go all the way up to my 4th gear and he has about 2 cars on me. We run again with the same outcome.

Just wanted to get your guys feedback on the outcome, is this accurate? We both are good drivers and know how to run the cars. Thanks.

Dam!! That's music to my ears. Of course, it's accurate. The -7- can't loose!

haha. thanks man......thanks a lot :(

Turbo23 08-26-05 12:23 AM

thats about right, still nice car you have thought. A few mods and you should be very quick

jamespond24 08-26-05 12:36 AM

Get a boost controller and turn the boost up to 17psi. Now that would be a closer race.

Snotcycle 08-26-05 03:12 AM

:withstupi 3 liters of piston on 17psi VS 2.6 liters of rotary on 10psi = fair? no no no and no

Cosmo_TT 08-26-05 04:55 AM

yeah but look at the weight diff
and supras are monsters both cars are great

1QWIK7 08-26-05 09:04 AM

nice kill man

now do some bpu mods and kill that FD..lol :D

or how about covert to a large single and make sure he never catches up!! hahaha jk

7THSIGN 08-26-05 09:45 AM

haha, thanks guys, I knew I was going to lose but my cousin thought I would win, lol he's always wrong ;)

I wish there was a supra forum like this one, but for some reason supraforum is down. I would love to get more knowledge on the car and aftermarket for it.

I think my first mod is going to be an HKS titanium exhaust with down pipe. Can’t wait! Thanks.

Huh? It's 1.3 liters on a 13B. Nice race though. Supras with basic bolts ons are pretty quick.

7THSIGN 08-26-05 12:07 PM

You know whats funny is, not only was I the one who taught him how to drive his RX7, but I was also the one who searched and searched to find the perfect RX7 for him. It took a while but he also owns his dream car. Thanks to me ;)

Snotcycle 08-26-05 12:49 PM

because of the way rotaries work, they get twice the power strokes per revolution. so if comparing to a piston engine, you double the displacement.

Sure :rlaugh: :bigthumb:

Force13B 08-26-05 01:31 PM

7THSIGN that about right considering your car weights about 400lb more then the 7.

more like 600-700. FDs are ~2800 and supras are ~34-3500.

redr1man 08-26-05 02:49 PM

Something about RX-7's and there awesome acceleration from a roll!!NICE KILL (for the RX-7).

I have never driven "driver" side of a Supra. Tell me, Why do you love the car so much? I mean is it the interior? Does it cruise or rev smoothly? Torque maybe? Just curious what get's people so off on driving one car rather then another. More specifically these two cars.

spimp 08-26-05 04:55 PM

This is the action that I'm looking for! Good Death!!!!!

i have driven both..really you have to drive it to know..im not saying every single person who drives a twin turbo supra stock or even modded will love the car to death but it def is a good feeling..

i havent driven a stock supra, i have driven a 500+rwhp supra since basically i have like 7 friends with supras lol...they tell me to just get one so i can join the club haha..anyway its def a good feeling to hear that engine when you go wot, THATS prob the most addicting part is the sound and the pull (in my case, a big single) of the engine..

its really hard to explain, supra guys know what i mean :)

its just a great car

My friend has the titanium on his supra and its awsome 4" piping is badass, I think that the Rod Millen Motorsport (RMM) Downpipe is actually a better choice than the hks, I belive that that the RMM DP gives you like 40 rwhp alone

I know, nothing Ive ever driven pulled like my friends supra tt and he just has bpu

coolingmist 08-26-05 09:02 PM

Well I have always loved the Supra, even when I was younger. All my life I have only owned Toyota’s. My first car was a 93 Camry, then I purchased a Celica, then a 2002 Celica. After that I purchased an MR2. When the time was right I went for my dream car which was the Supra. Everything worked out for me and I purchased it.

But the car is just great all around, handling, power and looks. I love it and am very happy to own one.

Motor City RX-7 08-27-05 01:46 AM

start modding the heck out of it and post up some pics

it's soooo easy to hit 400 rwhp in a Supra, and at that point you could pull your friends near stock FD from a high speed roll, easily

personally, I will always believe the FD is pure sex and the Supra looks kind of bulbous, but thats just me....heaven knows we FD owners put up with alot of crap to enjoy our sexy rotary time bombs :)

how about if I race you in my new '05 Corolla XRS with the Yamaha designed 2ZZ engine? haha...ultimate daily driver imo....reasonably quick and great mileage

von 08-27-05 06:21 AM

Personally I just see the 7 being slightly better in every aspect of driving/racing with the exception of power potential in only the highest modded supra's.

I would think even the NSX is more pleasurable. Supra's are not exotic. It's not like driving a Lamborghini or something. Geeks lol

The RX7 has many strong points, but the main reason the RX7 shines in my eyes is becuase of its power to weight ratio. I mean the car is only in the high 2,000lbs and can make a real good amount of power!

I loved the 2ZZGE motor, I had it in my celica. That was a very fun car to drive as well.

Hell 'n' Back 08-27-05 02:19 PM

If there was no rx7 i'd be driving a supra,

but thankfully there is a rx7 :)

RX-187 08-27-05 02:34 PM

Congrats on the purchase of the supra. You have a very nice car there. Good luck with it. :bigthumb:

I remember racing a guy that had a 10 second supra in my 300zx and i will never forget the sound of his engine. OMG wow thats all you can say about modded 2jz's. It sounded so amazing...like no other engine ive ever heard. To tell you the truth it kinda scared me.

yeah, i know what they sound like stock and they sound awesome but a big single with supporting mods DEF brings the beastly sound of the car..omg, its like sex but in sound LOL :D

Snotcycle 08-28-05 02:04 AM

supra's sound like a orgasm, that screaming I-6 is just magic. one time i was cruisin at about 80 and all of a sudden i hear this buzzing, hrm what could that be? before i can turn my head, a supra with a monsterous pipe goes screaming the fuck by tailed by a c5 if i was going 80 they must've been doing at least 110

7knight 08-28-05 09:00 AM

my buddy has a supra with these mods: intake, dp, full exhaust, intercooler and boost controller and put down 410hp, i think at 17 or 18 psi. he kept up with a GSX600R all the way up to 165mph..

those 2jz's can sure take alot of boost even on a stock block...

1QWIK7 08-28-05 11:39 AM

yup, there are people who are doing 900hp on a stock bottom end (dont know how reliable or safe that is) but they work lol

one of my supra friends did an n/a to single conversion..its a monster and it only makes about 500rwhp..i mean the sound man, the damn sound of the engine when doing pulls on the highway is just omg...lol

like a 2JZ sound will never be boring..i know sometimes i love the way my car sounds and sometimes i just want either quiet or a fun sound..when im on the highway and i punch it, i get the same boring buzzing sound..a 2JZ will never get boring, it will always sound good for whatever mood you're in..:D

we should just turn this thread into, "supras are great" thread..LOL

7THSIGN 08-28-05 11:55 AM

Well I was shocked after the race, even though I knew I was going to lose. But I didnt think by that much.

So now lets compare a stock RX7 to a stock Supra. What would the outcome be in that?

If I were to have an exhaust and downpipe added to my stock Supra, I just dont see how I could gain those 2 cars he had me by with just those mods. Maybe its because I am used to modifying inline 4's??? lol

But I have been reading that adding a downpipe, which eliminates both cats on a Supra, nets about 30-40hp gains. So add an exhaust and those are some incredible gains!! Hard to believe though.

im pretty sure you can take the FD if you do intake/dp/exhaust on your supra..especially off a roll, supras have amazing top end..you'll take him..

I kind of miss my MR2, I used to have 2 1/2 cars on him by 4th. Now he has that on me lol

Marshall 08-28-05 04:36 PM

Buy a used downpipe, cat back, MBC, and a Greddy BCC (~$600). Pop in a set of NGK 6097s and add half tank of 100 oct, reset ECU and set boost to 18 psi. Race again, you'll be amazed.

I am not really too sure, the 97 models were limited edition and came with the badges on the side fenders and also there is a limited edtion badge in the car. I guess they just didnt manufature too many that year.

brewster 08-29-05 11:20 PM

All 97's are limited editions. They just got special badging. It was probably just a ploy to sell more as they lowered the price by $10,000 that year also.

The 2JZ crank and rods are forged, but the pistons are cast.

You should register at supraforums if you haven't yet, there is a wealth of information there. That is, if registration is open...

That was the first place I tried to register at but it said registration was closed. Why would it be closed? Maybe the site is down?

Tim Benton 08-30-05 12:11 PM

I like the Supra too, with the blue color from 97 being my favorite since having seen a friend's here in Atlanta, but I'll just let ulost2my7 be the more vocal of the "foaming at the mouth for a Supra" crowd :) Although I do wonder why you haven't sold your 7 to get the Supra yet with all the pro supra love you've been giving it.

No the site's up, but registration was closed due to the outragious number of trolls that come just to cause trouble. So I guess it's still closed.

PM me your email addy and I'll PM it to an admin on SF and maybe they'll let you in.
