There and Back Again

Hey guys,

My name is MustardFacial and I'm Langley, BC. Traditionally I've never held a high stake in many japanese cars (always loved a good VW myself) but that all changed when I was 14 and my dad got me a $400 84 rx-7 to learn to drive standard with. Since then I've always had a soft spot for rx-7's not only because that old one was crazy fun to drive despite that the shock towers returned to the earth ages ago and thus had no rear suspension (literally. no rear suspension at all. The U-Joint would rub up against the body everytime you changed gears), but also because I just love crazy weird engines (I remember many a night carrying around a Type 2 ACVW block around like a suitcase, and giggling at how crazy and simple they were). But as I got older and the old rx became less road worthy we eventually had to sell it and I moved on to a Type 3 Squareback.

Years past. I stuck with VW's eventually moving on to getting a Mk V, but I still held that old Dorito in my heart. I also started getting an appreciation for racing and as I grew in skill, I also grew in my desire to go faster and faster. Until a couple of months ago a few friends and I were sitting around discussing how much fun it'd be to enter the 24 Hours of Lemons. We all agreed it'd be great fun and after mulling it around for a few months we became serious about it.

Our original idea was just to get the wackiest car possible. Something that has absolutely no business on a racetrack. Hundreds of cars were gone through, everything from Passport Optimas, to GMC Grumman's, to Datsun 510's, to chevy corvairs, etc etc. Until last night when I happened upon an ad on kijiji. An ad that would change my life forever and re-unite me with a long lost love. It read:

1988 Mazda RX-7
Has not been started in 5 years
flat tires
we lost the key (but have the keycode to get a new one cut)
$100

I had to have it. HAD TO. I called up the guy immediately and asked if I could come by and see it, he said sure and I pretty much just got up from my desk at work and walked off mumbling something how having to "return some videotapes." On the way there I called up a buddy and left a voice mail on his phone with the message:
"Dude. Dude. RX-7 $100. Meet me at [address] we need to look at this car right now"
He called back and agreed to meet. We both pulled up to the place at about the same time and there it was sitting in the driveway. Dirty, disgusting, but right then and there the car and I made a connection. I ran my hand over it's hood, peeked inside the glass. This was it.

my friend and I slapped $50 each on the counter and bought the car then and there. And that is how after a 12 year hiatus I acquired an RX-7 once again.
