AL Thanks from new member in Alabama.

My name is Bruce, and I live in Huntsville, AL. I want to say “Thank you!” to the members of this forum. I have been lurking here for a little over a year. Unfortunately, I didn't start reading the forum until AFTER I bought an RX-7.

In December of 2011, I bought a decent looking 1991 RX-7 Convertible for my son. I got a good price because the car had what I thought was a relatively minor fuel system problem (e.g., flooding on hot start). To make matters worse, it didn’t take long to realize that the previous owner had lied when he said that the car did not have any cooling system problems.

My son really loved the car (who wouldn’t?), which made it that much more heart-breaking when I realized a few days later that the car had major engine problems- compression leaking into the cooling system. It wasn’t too bad at first, but with a teenager driving it, it didn’t take long to deteriorate to the point that the car was not really drivable anymore.

The story has a happy ending, though. Because the generosity of member of this forum in dedicating their time to increase the knowledge of these special cars, we were able to rebuild the engine ourselves, and he has been driving it on a daily basis for 8 months. In fact, I like the car so much I am thinking about buying another one for myself.

Anyway, I want to thank everyone who contributes to this forum. But, I particular, I want to thank Kevin Landers, Aaron Cake, and Hailers. The information that you guys provided, both in, and outside this forum, was invaluable, and contributed directly to our success.

As payback, I plan to write a detailed “Post Mortem” of the engine teardown. I have some interesting observations on several different issues, including loosening (stretching?) of the tension bolts near the crack between the coolant seal groove and the coolant passage (could re-torqueing the bolts prevent this common failure?), the difference in coolant passage clogging properties between Block Weld and Alumaseal, and the poor side seal clearancing in a Mazda factory reman engine.

Thanks again,
Bruce
