Rotary Obsession
Hello all...I am the owner of a 1990 RX-7 Convertible. I bought the car back in July 2016 from a private owner in Danville, NH. Although the car had been in NH since 2004, it was originally from Redondo Beach, CA. The RX-7 is one of those cars I had wanted since I was a teenager. Before I purchased the RX-7, I had acquired a 1975 Porsche 914 in 2009 for the purposes of performing a rotary engine conversion. The plan was to have something interesting and unique as a Wankel powerplant in an emissions-exempt sportscar. After moving to Maine in 2014, I realized that I did not have the time to pursue an engine conversion, let alone restoration of the car itself. Since I had already acquired the most expensive parts involved in a new rotary engine build, and the fact that RX-7's could be registered as antique vehicles, and therefore inspection-exempt, I sold the 914 to an avid collector, and purchased the RX-7. My car had 128,800 miles when bought, is in excellent original condition, completely driveable, and has air conditioning! Although the engine seems to be perfect, I am building a new one which has the benefit of turbo-style rotor housings with their open exhaust sleeves. I would like to take the existing engine, and swap it into a 1986-1992 Mazda B-series pickup. Right now, I am motivated to continue acquiring the remainder of the parts needed to build a new engine, since genuine Mazda parts are getting more and more expensive every year, an more are becoming no longer available.
