Rotary noob from Ohio.
My name is adam, and i've had a rotary fascination since I was a kid. I just finished college and am working more consistently, so i'm in the process of unloading my Honda and all the parts I had for it to pick up a beater and a 90-92 Turbo II.
I've been lurking for a week or two just reading everything I can and learning. The RX-7 will be a weekend fun car and used for track days and shows. Trying to plan out the first mods in advance of getting the car. Looking to buy some time in early spring unless a deal I just can't pass up comes along. Being from Ohio, i'm probably looking to the southern states and Florida for a cleaner Turbo II.
Hopefully I can learn and ultimately contribute to this forum. So far the information seems solid and I already have learned a few very valuable things. Can't wait to be running a rotary in 2009.

Cool, it's a great place to be if you're in your 20s - early 30s. I am hoping to move down there permanently in the next few months. Although i'll store the RX at my dad's house while i'm working on it. Garage space FTW.

Hey,
Columbus here.
I bought my first car (Turbo II) when I was in high school. I bought it from the detroit area. It was a great car, but it did have quite a bit of rust. I had the car repainted, and when they were sanding it down, the rear quarterpanels pretty much disintegrated from rust. Sold that car , and then bought the FD about 5 years ago
They're fun cars for sure , I would definantly keep a daily driver though

Thanks for the advice. I had no intention of trying to use the Turbo II as a daily. For one I want to keep it as nice as possible. I should be picking up a Honda hatchback or Toyota something or other here in the next few weeks. If it all goes to plan (it never does, but one can hope) i'll have a decent beater and about 7-8k to buy the RX and start working on it a bit. I'm going to start with cooling upgrades. And probably get some suspension work done. I'm thinking a Koni/GC setup with RB swaybars, but need to do a bit more reasearch.
Yeah me and two friends found a house in Hyde Park with a two car garage. We are all transferring to UC and pretty excited about it.
I have been daily-ing my tII for a while now and it has done nothing but treat me right. Finally got something to drive for this winter though, and it is nice to have something to drive while working on the 7.
You sound like you have your plan together pretty well. Good luck on finding one. Check out www.ohiorotaries.com it moves slow but there are good deals on there. Also if I were you and doing suspension mods I would look into a full coil over like Stance for instance, you wont be disappointed.

Like I said, i've been doing a lot of learning
. The Hyde Park house sounds like a good deal. I'm actually walking from UC this weekend. Took me 6 years, but I get my "ok to hire" paper finally. I wouldn't mind DDing the RX-7, but this really is meant to be my fun car. The Prelude i'm selling was a fun car/DD and it just became more of a hassle to work out the logistics as I worked on it.
I'm still researching the suspension, the Koni/GC combo is just a setup i'm familiar with and have been very hapy with. It's basically a shock turned coil over if you aren't familiar with it. The trouble is finding opinions on the different options that are out there. I want something trackable I can use on the streets occasionally. Mostly because I don't like to build trailor queens. I hate driving down to a car show and seeing stuff pass me on a trailor, at that point, why build it?
The suspension is tentative. For now I know I want to go with a bigger radiator, twin oil coolers, a horizontal front mount and possibly a fogger system for track days. Keep her cool. Ultimately i'm looking for 325-350 hp, but thats a year or two down the road. And i'll have the interior and suspension sorted out by then. No point in having the power if you can't use it.
I'm leaning towards the Koni because I rarely see them busted, even on DD cars, i've got mine currently set to about 2/5th of their adjustment and they handle awesome, and the GC setup lets me carry extra springs for the track and easily swap them. That way I don't have to get too beaten up. That and they have a USA based facility for both to get serviced at and my buddy does revalved konis when he isn't working with his daytona prototype team. So overall, it's a well connected setup for me, heheh
