Reviving an 89 Vert (Seattle, WA)
IRL my first name is Drake. Hence the duck in my user name.
My first RX-7 was a 79 with 60K on it that I bought used in 82 when I got out of school. I loved that car and swore if they ever made a vert RX-7 that I’d buy one.
I sold the 79 with 125K in March of 1990 and replaced it with an 89 vert (Harbor Blue Metallic?) that I bought from the local Seattle dealer as a 150 mile demo. I have owned it ever since and took very good care of it until about 2008. It spent it’s first few years parked on the street but has been garaged since about 1995.
Due to having other vehicles (including several motorcycles) available to drive, torn vert top side pockets, and a small leak in the radiator I parked it in my garage with a smart battery tender on it several years ago (last registered in 2008) and it has been sitting ever since. I’ll be moving soon so I need to get it running again. (Despite neglecting it for all those years, I’m still glad I own it and really look forward to driving it again.)
Though I’m not a certified mechanic or anything, I grew up being my dad’s tool monkey when he wrenched on the family cars so I’ve always done my own wrenching on my own cars as well as rebuilding a couple of BMW K bikes “from scratch.”
Manuals: I have a Haynes for it from the early 90s and the factory manual in PDFs.
Stuff I did to it over the years:
Beefed up front and rear anti-sway bars (right after I bought it)
Stabilizer bar across the tops of the front struts
Upgraded headlights to H4 Xenon. (Non-HID)
Blaupunkt MP3 CD player with all speakers upgraded (except headrest) and subwoofer under the rear deck (moderately-sized, not gangsta loud)
It started cutting out on left turns back in the 90s so I fixed that by running a direct ground from the battery to the frame. (I think I learned that here.)
Current status:
About 90K on the clock.
“Ran when parked.” (Seriously, this isn’t a CL ad.)
Body & paint job still in 8-9 out of 10 condition
Needs a new vert top. May get the headliner on it replaced since that has some minor staining.
Seats show some wear but are good enough for now.
Radiator leak.
Tires - haven’t had air added since I parked it.
Rejuvenation plan:
1) Since it’s been sitting so long, I’m sure the FIs probably have some varnish in them so I plan to pull those and have them professionally refurb’d (I'd consider upgraded FIs if there's something better though.)
2) Swap in a good radiator (Since I plan to keep it I’ll probably go with new vs. used. Any recommendations here?)
3) New plugs (Any recommendations? NGK Iridium?)
4) New fuel filter (Should I try to siphon/drain the old gas from it? Best method for doing this?)
5) Oil & filter change (Mobil 1)
6) New AGM battery (Any recommedations here?)
7) Get it started (Should I spray some fogging oil or whatever into the spark plug or FI holes prior to doing this?)
8) Maybe new tires since the old ones are Blizak style snow tires (I used to take it skiing a lot) and I have a spare set of rims for it (same as the stock BBS rims) Since I live in The Great Northwet, probably get something as performance-oriented as possible that still has good wet traction.
9) Brake bleed (replace/rebuild any cylinders that may have gone bad)
10) Registration/insurance once I have it roadworthy again
11) Replace vert top/liner
12) Since I haven't worked in years, I can't remember if the car has any zerks that need to be greased
What have I missed? (Aside from the air filter which I don’t think is near-term critical.)
Here’s a pic of it that I scanned in back in 1996.
