Resurrecting my 1987 RX-7 Turbo
Hi everyone.
So I recently decided to resurrect my 87 Turbo. A little history on the car. A friend of mine bought it new and had a ton of work done to it by a rotary specialist in Southern California. Forgot the name, maybe Rotary Power. Were they around in the 80s?
He had the engine ported, put in a larger turbo and intercooler, HKS PFC F-CON ECU, and some custom one piece exhaust from Japan. He was running a lot of boost and we had it up to 170mph between L.A. and Vegas once. Not that fast by today's standards but in 1989 that was hella fast.
He's blown the apex seals several times running too much boost. Finally I got my hands on the car when he didn't want to repair it anymore, and I put in a GReddy Profec B with much more tame settings.
After 2-3 years of sitting, I think the alarm system is standing in my way. The car will not start, the valet switch no longer works, and the windows went down when I was cranking the engine today by jumping 12v to the solenoid, and they won't go back up. The aux channels on the alarm were wired to roll the windows up and down so I'm pretty sure it the alarm system. It's a Derringer 2 and I have no idea how to remove it, disable it, or bypass it.
The car has only 33K miles on it and I'd really like to get it going again. My son is almost the age I was when I first drove this thing and he wants to drive it. Man, that makes me and the car feel a lot older. Looking forward to tapping into everyone's RX7 brains for this one.
Oh, btw, I found this site when searching for RX7 and Derringer, and I see IceMark had a Derringer manual that he had posted for someone. Sorry to hear he passed away. Sounds like he was really a pillar to this community and well liked by everyone.
