GA Project Grandpa

Hello fellow RX-7 freaks. My name is Dean. I don't get how that makes me more or less of a computer bot but whatever. I'm not new to the Rx-7 but I am out of touch with them.
In the early 90's I had give or take 9 Mazda's ranging in years from 79 to 84. When I say 9 I mean 3 that actually ran and the rest were parts cars. I have been looking for a Mazda for a while but most were over priced and completely ruined. Well this Memorial day weekend my friend and I were out scouting for old cars. And we took some off beat back roads through the west side of GA. We were on our tour of small towns and came though a town called Temple GA and we passed a rather large intersection we decided to keep going straight. And off in the distance I could make out an RX7 on the left side of the road. It looked to be a 1979 or 80 couldn't tell at that distance. I asked my buddy to stop so we could check it out. After some maneuvering we found the correct way to get into this guys driveway.

I looked the car over and it was in pretty decent shape for being old. After a short inspection I spoke to the owner and it turns out that he just pulled it out of his barn and it had been sitting there since 1996. This car has 37k on it, its a family owned car since new. He and I agreed on a price and he brought it to me with his roll back. Really nice guy. Anyhow long story short I now have a project that will need to be restored and just about every thing on the car has to be checked out and repaired if needed. I'm currently replacing the starter, clutch master and slave. And in the near future the Master and calipers. Will post some pictures of grandpa when i get my phone fixed. All of the parts you see in the car are parts that I took off. the car was 100% together when I got it.

Well had a starter ordered and recieved it today, apparently the wrong one. So I had them order another. Hope its corrrect this time. If not I may just swap out the solenoid from the new on since it costs just as much as the reman. Which is very dumb pricing if you ask me.

Well guys I have been doing some stuff to the car. Mostly trying to get the thing to fire. I'm getting fire on the leading coil but not the trailing coil.I checked both coils, swapped the wires and pretty much the problem moved to the other coil. So then I pulled the coils out and tested them for resistance and both get the same or really close readings. + to - 1.1 ohms - to Center I get 8.5 ohms and those numbers match on both. So I assume they are both good.

So I then moved on to the ignitors and swapped the connectors and the problem moved to the other coil. So I'm in need of an ignitor. I searched every pull-a-parts inventory and can only find one RX-7 but its 40 miles away,so screw that. I'm going to move down to the classified section and see if one of you may have what I need laying around. The Dizzy, cap and rotor are in good shape. The wires are ugly and old but I have bigger fish to fry before I get into that. Pretty comes later. Damn I guess my post count is too low I can't post in the wanted section..... Well if anyone has one PM me I'm pretty sure all ignitors from 1980 up to 85 will work. I need one but if the price is right ill take 2 Oh and I need the plastic Snorkle for the breather. If anyone has one let me know.

Thanks guys... Having a little issue.. Possibly stuck apex seals possible loss of compression. I purchased another ignitor and now both leading and trailing are firing. FYI on the ignitors. Oreillys sells one for 29.95 Just so you dont have to spend 200 on one. I checked each plug wire at the plugs got fire on each leading and trailing. Sprayed a little starting fluid into the carb knowing i need to rebuild it but it should at least fire off. I have had 2 pops as if it tried to start but nothing since. I guess I'll move on to rebuilding the Nikki and deleting as much of the rat nest as possible. I will have to rebuild the carb either way so at least it will be done.

Not a bump just an update..
Tried the carbon lock fix with amsoil and spun the engine over a few times.. Shot some starting fluid into it. And fired it up. Since the entire fuel system needs to be overhauled any way I decided that I'm satisfied it will run. It stayed running when I kept spraying starting fluid into the carb. So I assume if i get the fuel system up to par it will run.

On a funny note the oil filter has the last oil change date scratched into it. It was 5/2/1996 at 35k 2000 mile 20 year oil is awesome.

Well now I'm a bit stumped. I dropped the gas tank and fuel pump today. Its not good news. The tank is pretty much trash and the sender is so rusted out its never going to work again. I need to source a tank which I know they are not made any more. So I guess there are some limited choices for this.

ok guys, this is supposed to be an intro only section and it has gotten too technical and border line build thread. the OP should start a build thread in the 1st gen specific section if he wishes to continue this. thanx.
