My mother bought a new 1985 RX7. It now has 16,000 miles on it. Has always been garaged, never driven in winter, excellent condition. I do not live nearby and have not looked at the car closely. She thinks it is an XL. I know it has leather interior and a sun roof. She had quite a bit of work done on it last year, I assume replacing belts, gaskets, seals etc. Tires are original, so I would replace those before driving off with it.

She is not driving the car anymore and wants to get rid of it. I told her that I would buy it, but I have not idea how to get a fair price. Book values do not go back that far. Dealer says $2-3 thousand. Book values on 1990s run $3-5 thousand. I see all kinds of asking prices on e-bay. I would really appreciate any input you might have on what this car might be worth. I don't want to take advantage of her, but I alos don't want to overpay for the car. If I buy it, I will keep in in garage and drive in good weather, probably 2-3 thousand miles per year. Depending on what she wants to do, I am thinking of offering her $5 thousand and telling her we can list on e-bay and I will sell and give here the difference if someone is willing to pay a lot more.

Again, I would really appreciate any input you have on value and on owning this care in general.

2-4 thousand is a good reasonable price. For 16 000 miles. some sell for 10 000 but those usually take a long time to sell on ebay.
