GA Newbie w/ 1983 RX-7 GS(?)

Hey guys. I'm JD and I just bought my first mazda rx-7 and it's a first gen. I'll be dropping over $5000 into it but only know where $1200 is going (paint job, new dash, radiator, gas tank, door handles) but have no idea where to put the other $3800. Any ideas? It's my project car and hope to have it as a track car/daily driver. Any help would be greatly appreciated because I have a LOT of questions.

How is the engine? How does the exhaust look when it's started up? If it's low miles and strong, I'd put the money into a serious, mandrel bent "header" with a mandrel bent 2.5", three muffler custom exhaust system set-up and then retune the carburetor.

After that, I'd dump money into suspension and then brakes.

Then I'd get a bodykit as the final measure if there's any cash left.

If the engine is old and tired, then you've got no choice but to get it rebuilt by a pro or buy one outright.

That said - Welcome aboard, JD! The more 1stgen folk who join, the better!

The engine only has 100k miles on it and is excellent. Just rebuilt the carburetor and the exhaust is in great condition with no black or gray smoke. I was wondering what would be the best mods for added performance? I'd rather have torque than horsepower so my 0-60 time will be a lot less than stock 9.9seconds. Most track cars have the quarter mile done in that amount of time. I'd like to have it at least at 5 seconds. And ideas?
Thanks for the welcome, glad to be here. I like the first gens because of the weight and handling. Second gen was too heavy and third gen is too expensive. But I definitely will check out header and exhaust. Know where to get it cheap? Thanks again!

Well, the best mods are done inside the engine or by slapping on a power adder but, barring those pricey options, optimizing the intake and exhaust is how it's done, just like any other hot rod. You've already got 3.90 gears in the rear and a 5 speed, so you need that engine to hit redline fast to bring down the times.

Free flowing exhaust and intake is how it's done.

Use "best mods" as search words in the 1stgen tech section and start reading!
