newbie and buying a gSL-SE
newbie and buying a gSL-SE
I am new to this forum and test drove an 84 GSL-Se yesterday. It is exceptionally clean body and newer white respray. Lowered suspension with a catback exhaust that has only 1 cat. I am pushing 50 and would like to get a sports car again that is affordable, fast and fun to drive.
I can not believe that I sold my restored 70 Plymouth Barracuda w/ a 383 to buy an RX2 streetported and built by tripoint when I used to live in Northridge in So. Cal. The rX2 was just a lot more fun to drive than the Cuda and back then no one knew that musclecar will be worth a lot more now. Bought a new 84 rx7 gS as a daily driver.
In 1992 moved here to San Francisco and sold both RX and used my 85 turbo 626 5 door as my DD. In 1995 I met guys here in the bay Area who opened a speed shop that are new into rotaries that I bought another rX2 in LA that has a 13b bridgeported w/48IDA's and an 83 rX7 with a 13b with a sidedrafted Weber 45's. I sold them a year later and moved on to another interest.
Now I want to get this SE but after agreeing on the price and owner kept on insisting that it will pass smog. I asked him to come with me and I will pay for smog and he does not want to do it and said that the price reflects that I am responsible for the smog. I backed out since I do not know anyone here in the bay Area to get it to pass. I saw all the emission equipment intact except for the cone filter and the catback that I might have an issue. It was fast for a stock SE and thought it might be mildly ported. I need help guys since I really want to buy this car because it will be difficult to get an SE at this condition. Any advice is appreciated and thank you for your replies.

I don't have any advice to share other than it sounds like there might be an issue passing smog, which you already figured out.
If its in nice shape, it might be worth the risk. You can always get a replacement cat(s) if that is the cause of the issue.
Let me know if you want an extra set of eyes on the car. Another option is to check out the 86-90 RX7. Those also drive well and are pretty bullet proof.

my rx7
Just went ahead and bought the 84 GSL-Se. It was too clean and well taken care off to pass. He did not even put it on craigslist since he is from my neighborhood and put a sign 2 days ago. I am grateful.
Wow. That thing is in ridiculously good shape. I can even forgive the goofy spoiler.
Good luck with the car. Rotorsports is down in Santa Clara if you need a good rotary specific mechanic.

Thanks for the tip. Yeah I dont like that spoiler too but Im happy that it passed smog. I should have just bought it last Saturday since he agreed on a lower price then. You do not want to know what car he got that spoiler from.
