VA New to the rx7 world

So for starters I'll say, Hi! Names Aaron, I'm currently in the NAVY as a GunnersMate 3rd Class. I've owned my rx7 since jan. Bought it for $700, and it still ran and drove. Had some ishues though, leaking fuel injector, leaking water pump, dry rotted tires, mufflers starting to rust away, headlight motors don't work and bad clutch. Already have 2 sets of tires on stand by to drift with. Replaced the clutch, replaced o-rings on injector, bought and installed a long tube hedder and ordering new mufflers this week, right now running straight pipe. Its a white 86 GXL with a strait and 99% rust free body. I used to do body work so I'm gona fix it soon. Gona paint car flat black. This rx is strictly gona be a play toy. Will be used for drift and road racing. Ima build it simple and easy to work on. Not planning on hopping it up a lot. Just making it breath better and handle better. Not to woried bout looks. That's why I'm gona be using steelies as my wheels. 15s and 16 as drifters and 17s as street and road racing wheels. Ill post pics rilly soon prob in a day or two.

That's the day I picked it up for $700. Ran and drove, it just had and still has a few ishues.

Well, I found out what the problem was. Bad watter seal in the motor. Looks like its in for a rebuild. But on the up side of things, I just had a friend give me a 302 for free cuz he doesent need it anymore. I know a lot of you say its just "sacralige" to put a piston motor in a rx7. Honestly I don't rilly care what everyone thinks. I just want a fun car to drive. Infact, I usualy stray away from the norm or most popular rout. But hay what floats you boat might not float mine.

Hello and welcome. Good luck with your project, whatever you choose.

Sucks about never getting to drive the rotary in good condition though. It is a completely different beast then the V8. Either will be fun though, I'm sure.

Ya I hear ya on not experiencing a rotary in good condition. Sometimes I think I'm gona just rebuild the rotary insted of install the 302. Ill just figure that out when the time comes. I just want a drift car, that's bout it. How I get there I don't rilly care. I don't give a crap about staying true to a manufactar. I just wana have fun. I know a lot about making custom parts, just never have a reason to make the parts. Kinda like how I was gona retro fit some projectors off a lexus onto my rx7 but since the build is questionable I've put it off for now. Also hard finding people who want my work when everyone gets but hurt about people straying away from the norm. Kinda wana try making custom taillights but prob won't be able to sell do to the cost. Idk

My thoughts on custom cars or modifications is that you should either make them reversible or common if you will ever consider selling the car. Otherwise, have fun! I have contemplated multiple different lighting mods for my FD. I will eventually fab up something for the fronts. I am not sure if I will do the same for the rears or just buy a set of the Sake Bomb http://sakebombgarage.com/wp/?page_id=122

Anyway, don't care what the naysayers think. It is your car, do what you want. Hell, I catch a lot of crap for still having an Automatic transmission in mine. But I always question them back if they have ever even tried driving one. Are they paying my bills? Do they drive my car? No. so who cares what they say.

Hello,
Goodluck with your project.
I would invest in getting lighter wheels though, especially if you're going to autox.

Nice looking 7 you have there but it sounds like you got the raw end of a deal with the blown water seal. But that does happen, a lot more on the older 13b's. I just thought you might want to consider 1 thing with swapping out for a v8. The rotary only weighs a couple hundred pounds, which gives your car a balanced front to rear weight ratio. The 302 will make you front-heavy, may make "drifting" not go so well. Just a thought, good luck either way.

Thanks.. I still drive it around and play with it. Just gotta be careful. When people sell a rolling shell for $600 I think I got a good deal with mine since I drove away for only $700. Ya the extra poundage is kinda whays deturing me from the v8.
