To do the swap the right way you'll want to replace the entire engine and all the drive line , as well as the engine harness and ecu. Everything on a Turbo is different.
A 86-88 is s4 89-91 is s5, most jdm engines you'll find will be s5. You can run an s5 engine but you'll need to run it with s4 electronics.
There's a lot to be said about the swap, there are cheaper ways to do it but if you want it to last and be solid do it the right way. Taking the cheap way out is a bad idea and usually a hack job that will blow up or not run right.
You can run it on the name drive train but it will not handle much power.
Rotaries are very unforgiving if you don't treat them right.
