TX New owner

Sup guys! My names JP and I've been drawn out here by my persistently annoying beehive oil cooler. My friend had this FB sitting around and didn't like it so he just gave it to me, making me the 3rd official owner. I live out just north of Austin, TX so if anyone knows of any car meets out here and wants to meet up let me know. Hope my stay is a friendly one ^^

Well, it doesn't get any cheaper than that! Thanks for taking the time to register and welcome aboard, JP! I've got an '83 rex myself.

Yeah, i finally got the oil cooler out and replaced the o rings with moderate ease, got the banjo back on and the collar decided to rupture so i had a massive leak(about a 1 to 1.5 quarts in 7 miles) but its still running strong, just need to figure out the size for the crush washer. How are those KYBs holding up? Gas-adjust or just standard struts? I'm thinking after I get all the leaks sorted out I'm gonna need new struts since I'm fairly certain my suspension is out. Which energy bushing set did you get? Did you get them off respeed? How much of a difference did you notice? My dream for this car is to simply make it hold down the windyest, turnyest, and quite possibly the most dangerous road in the area. I've watched a couple people race, wreck, and in some cases die while doing so down this road and I'm no exception. If you wanna gmaps Lime Creek Road then go for it but I don't think it'll give it enough justice, the road is riddled with sudden elevation changes, blind turns that fool you into thinking they are much shallower than they really are, and disrepair due to the fact that it's the only way out to the main road for the residents living on it. Even still I wanna hit it at about 50 to 60 and make every turn with the help of the car and maybe a little drift skill without dropping below that so anything suspension and handling wise is gonna have to come first, power doesn't even place in my built at the moment. If i'm ever up in Arlington the we'll have to meet up, I go to Dallas from time to time so its not like its that far off course.

Welcome to the 1st gen family!

1. Tokicos are always a good brand to have, they are the cheaper end for the blues but perform well, most will say save up the extra if you can and spring for the adjustable Illuminas so you can change em on whim.

2. The crush washer for the beehive, I would suggest consulting the Parts Fiche for the part number then call Malloy Mazda or Mazda South up in Austin and see if they can get it for you, I've always heard great things from both of those dealers.

3. I can't comment on the Energy Suspensions bushings but if/when you decide to get springs, RE-Speed RE-Speed RE-Speed...get the coilovers and never look back.

4. As far as the lime creek run, you're riding a fine line there, been down it a few times in a vert FC and 4th gen Eclipse and hitting those kinds of turns at anything above 40 is lunacy[especially with the amount of gravel and dirt that gets kicked up on the inside corners]...not to mention completely stupid. Once you talk about pushing the suspension that hard there are a ton of fundamental issues with the rear watts-link design and binding that can cause disastrous results like snap oversteer which will end up like some of the cars you've mentioned. I suggest for your own safety and those of the residents that live there...you simply drive the **** out of that road AT the speed limit [what is it like 30-35?] even then it's still a tight road. I highly doubt you'll ever be able to accomplish that kind of ride from an FB w/o r-comps and some seriously engineering of the suspension and a pair of stones the size of bowling *****. I realize that Lime Creek is a grail of badass driving...but please please PLEASE do not turn into one of those guys that you WILL end up hearing about on the news who takes an SUV with an entire family in it off the road because you pushed a little too hard.

I know, like I said, its my dream for that car and its a dream for a reason. 30 is the speed limit and it occasionally drops to 15 on the turns. Its more my ego, when I first got the 7 and took it down there I'd forgotten most of the road so when i hit that first hair pin the gravel dragged me away and the ditch swallowed my baby. It sucked alot, especially since it was 2am and it blew out my front left tire and my spare had no air in it, but i drove on that for about 12 miles before being able to stop safely. So yeah, definately a pride and ego thing. I guess its giving me more of a goal than anything.

As for the tokikos, I've read some gnarly stuff about the mounts for their struts, I've also got guy that will stand by KYB all day and night. However I'm not sure how those are going to handle with coil overs, I'm assuming that Tokikos with CO springs and KYBs with the same springs aren't going to feel the same amount of change amirite?

And as for the crush washer, I gave up on finding it and just opted for a well sized fibre washer that was recommended to me by a veteran mechanic (by my understanding anyways), and that seems to be holding up great since it still compresses the same as the crush washers. Which reminds me that I need to throw those pics of my oil cooler up for DIY instructional purposes since I looked everywhere for an answer with a picture which no one seemed to have. Almost threw the thing through a window, it pissed me off so bad. Anyone know what the deal is with the respeed pedestal in case I feel like swapping over to a front mount cooler?
