New member planning on eventually taking on an RX-7 restore project
Greetings,
My name is Dustin. Unlike most kids who were 17, I didn't dream about my first car being some sweet brand new Mustang, or Camaro - or anything that was fresh off the lot and cutesy or roaring with tons of cylinders or lack of fuel efficiency - I wanted an RX-7, and thanks to my own hard work and diligence I managed to save enough money for my dad to match me to snag a 87 RX-7 GXL for $1,350 as my first car. Unfortunately the noted flooding problems that plagued it plus the high mileage that eventually pushed the motor to its last miles within my first 6 months of owning it made my time with it very short lived. I'm 30 now, graduated with an IT degree, and am preparing to put money back to start an RX-7 restore project. Primarily I want an RX-7 which the body is in decent condition, and work on finding techs who can handle restoring, rebuilding, or replacing the rotary engine and tranny to square one, and upon restoring all of the drive train and other necessary repairs under the hood, begin little mods one by one.
I primarily love the 86-88 generation hatchback style. My 87 had a sun roof. I'm hoping I can eventually find a way to do a mod to change the panel into a glass one to make it a moon roof - which I'm sure is a bit pricey.
None the less, I'm excited to own one of these again, and give it the proper restoration I didn't have the will or money to do when I was younger and dumber!
