I had several friends with RX7s in high school - grew up around these cars. The first bought a 1st gen GSL-SE. The car had manual steering and he installed some sort of exhaust that made a big difference in power. Either that, or the added noise made it seem like it was faster - either way, it was more fun. I always liked how light and tossable that car felt.
My second buddy purchased an '88 10 AE (Turbo II). This was clearly heavier than the GSL-SE, but we had a great time with the turbo/boost. Since, this friend has gone through several more 2nd gens (NA cars - more reliable and lighter) and a 3rd gen (and an RX8, now that I think about it). He's a rotary fiend.
Back to the first friend - he ended up selling the GSL-SE for a modified '87 Turbo II. I never drove the Turbo II, but did ride in it once. It was a pretty fast car, but I missed the original look of the GSL-SE. The 2nd gen had aftermarket wheels (not my favorite - the best wheel on a 2nd gen that isn't significantly wider than stock for racing are the BBS wheels from the convertibles - personal preference). The GSL-SE just looked classic. The 2nd gen had massive exhausts hanging off the back (functional yes) that I always thought detracted from the otherwise clean lines of the 2nd gen.
