The first time I saw a FD RX-7 was in the winter of 1992 at the Tacoma Mall in Tacoma Washington. It was red and sitting alone in the parking lot and it was the most beautiful car I had ever seen. In 1997 I test drove a red R1 in Washington D.C. but by then I had heard of the mechanical germlins associated with the car, coupled with the fact that the car was at the extreme high side of my price range, I backed off. In 2004 I ran across a Silver Touring Edition at Jeff Haaz Mazda here in Houston. I called about the car and was told it actually belongs to Jeff Haaz, it was his personal RX-7 that he had finally decided to sell (why I have no idea). At that point however, I had two small kids and even though my wife was completely supportive, it didn't seem like the right time. Fast forward to today, my Lexus IS300 is nearly paid off, and I found a beautiful Silver Touring edition in Austin and I am once again considering an RX-7.
The car still makes me nervous, I've never seen a car where it's pretty much a given that the engine will need to be replaced, but I am really tempted to give it a go.

Went to Maz-Max yesterday...
I wanted to see if they still work on Rx-7's and they are like a mile from my office. They said they don't but gave me the number of a guy named Pat here in Houston who does. I picked their brains awhile about the rotary and the mods that need to be done in order to make the car reliable (or more so). They were pretty cool guys. Now I just have to find the right car at the right price.
Maz-Max

They did give me the number of a guy named Pat here in town who works on RX-7's I guess I should call him and see if he has a shop or works on them on the side.
