I recently purchased a 1986 rx and I’m in the process of bringing it back to life. I have been lurking on the forum for a bit and I hope to one day contribute, but for now I will not speak unless spoken to lol. Mostly for far of my lack of knowledge! I know I dont know any of you yet but thank you all for the wealth of information you have made available to the rest of us!

I’m about an hour north of Knoxville near the KY/VA line. I would really like to go to a rotary meet, I have always heard that this community was pretty awesome. Do you know of anything going on? There isn’t any new post in our area forum. Now back to fighting rusty bolts.....

I bought the car about three weeks ago for $250. PO got it from a junk yard and wanted to swap the 13b into a Miata...I have just been cleaning and removing parts I know need replaced so far. I am waiting on a hoist to pull the engine for rebuild. Also have been sourcing parts

Engine status is still in question I took a plug out on each rotor and dumped in a good amount of marvel mystery oil and it spun fine. I noticed that the trailing and leading plugs were in the wrong spot on the rear so hopefully that was making the car run like crap and that’s why they junked it! Haven’t had the time to really get into it with work and family lately but for peace of mind I think a rebuild is the right course as it car has 270k+ and I don’t have any info on its history. The shifter is just flopping around so it need a rebuild at least if not a new transmission. Only time will tell.

Man thank you for letting me know that I was searching for some good reputable builders! I really want to do the rebuild myself but then again I really want the engine to run reliably lol

I would personally try to start the engine that's in the car. Get it running and then perform a proper compression test on the engine with a rotary compression tester and see where you stand.
As for the shifter, there's one nylon bushing that needs to be replaced on the shifter and it will be back to normal. You will also want to buy a new spacer ring and wave washer as well as the top insulator in the shifter that holds the shifter to the trans. Replacing the bushing is about a 10 minute job and the parts are cheap from Mazda.
