MO New here

Hi! Just started the restoration of my 1985 Rx-7 GSL. Hopefully is running by summer. Great to have such a good forum for support and reference!

Welcome to the forum!! Love the Sunbeam Silver over burgundy! Do you know any of the car's history? How long has it been sitting?

Yes! I really love that combo too (same as the 1985 advertisements), I purchased the car from the son of the original owner, as the owner passed away and he inherited the vehicle. Bought in April 1985 and was quite regularly used until 1992. It has about 111,000 miles on the odometer. The vehicle sat in a detached garage until a week ago. It's bone stock. Surprisingly, fluids are all like new and topped off. No leaks, no rust (never driven in the snow/winter and always kept in a garage). Super dusty and somebody opened the engine bay and left it open...so it had like a solid 1/8" layer of dirt/dust all over the top and engine. So the car is kind-of a "barn find"/"bring a trailer" story. I've always wanted an FB. I had a blaze red 1991 FC with a streetport for a long time, until an idiot ran a red light on me and totaled it.

Here's how I found it after sitting still for 19 years.

And the engine bay situation...

Here it is on a trailer on its way to its new home.

And here it is as it sits after the first wash... ready to get all serviced and restored. I have a lot of work ahead of me.

Wow, bone stock and all original!! Those are the best! I love original and unmodified RX-7's! Its definitely a solid find and will be a lot of fun bringing the car back to life! It likely won't take a ton, but expect the fuel system to be your biggest challenge. The tank may need removed and professionally cleaned, though I've been successful in cleaning them at home. I did one a few years back on a 10th Anniversary RX-7 that I was restoring. The carb is fairly easy to go through and the rest for your work should be just basic maintenance. Would love to see a restoration thread on the car in the 1st Gen section in the builds section!

I'll be starting my thread there soon. Hopefully right after christmas. Regarding the fuel system cleaning, to my luck I've been working on fuel system my whole adult life (since my Navy MOS was specifically on fuel systems and I've been a Utilities Maintenance Mechanic for about 18 years) ...so even though there's many differences between a car and a ship or the industrial sector... that hopefully shouldn't be a huge problem for me (knock on wood!). I'm more worried about electrical stuff and the emission controls of that era... plus I've never worked much on carbureators.
