New guy just looking for insight.

Hello everyone my name is Aaron, I am 20 and reside in Florida. I have to say that I am more of an American muscle kinda guy, my daily driver is a 72 Chevelle, but my friend owned an 87 RX-7 NA that was in bad shape. it had no interior except the driver seat, it was also not driving well as it would not rev. over 4500 rpms. I bugged him about it and before he went off to Iraq he gave it to me. I spent the better part of a year bringing it back from the dead, after striping it down, painting the inside black and hunting down all the interior and dyeing it black as well, the inside was complete and a new fuel filter took care of the rev. problem. I love the car but ever since i moved it to my new home it will over heat after only six min. of driving and the oil pressure gauge is reading over 110 psi. It is stopping me from driving it for now but hopefully i can get some help with that and make it a daly driver for now. Great to be here, thanks!

What are you using for radiator and fans? Have you checked your thermostat?

Post a pic of the engine bay near the radiator area.

Is the oil pressure high on startup or always? What is the range?

Rotary oil pressure is generally pretty high like that at startup and high revs. I'm assuming you are running a decent, recent oil filter?

Bringing back a thread from the dead-

I bought this car together with my girlfriend as a joint project for us to do. It is actually a more rare- 87 sport without sunroof! The "painted black interior" has now been removed, & replaced w/ an OEM blue interior. All carpets/upholstery were rigorously cleaned prior to install, it's like a brand new car!

The oil pressure problem was a funny one- Car overheats and indeed has a blown coolant seal. The gauge would rise progressively with time. It ended up being a short between the temp sensor wire & oil pressure sensor wire. When BOTH wire's were hooked up properly, the temp gauge wouldn't budge, and the oil pressure would slowly rise to >110. However, unplugging the temp sensor wire yielded still no temp, but a properly functioning oil pressure gauge.

We'll be tracing the short out when the engine is removed for rebuilding.

Our goal for this car is much different. We're doing a quite thorough restoration, with a few improvements along the way. We plan to:
- rebuild the S4 engine with all new hard seals,
- use an S5 upper IM and actuate the VDI/AUX ports with RPM switches/air pump
- replace any wear item: brakes, trans & differential seals + fluid, new suspension bushings/shocks/ differential mount, coolant & oil cooler hoses, etc etc etc.

Our goal is to have a dependable car that we can drive to Sevenstock in either 2012 or 2013.

Here's a few pictures, I'll probably be starting a build journey thread soon, but I just started my last semester in school (mechanical engineer major @ USF) so this car will be on hold until December of this year.

Black interior w/ all the spare parts inside

More goodies!

Laughable vise grip fix for smog pump, there's another pair of vise grips holding the thermostat neck down

Interior after we removed everything, and tore down the included spare 13B

Cleaned hatch carpets and trim installed! Still need better condition bin lids.

Re-foamed mode control box, for maximum fan out-put. We'll have a well-performing R12 AC system in this in the future (Mechanical Engineer background kicking in, haha)

Most of the interior complete.

The car outfront of my house. As you see it's missing ALL the aero pieces except the duckbill! Even the aluminum under-engine pan is gone. So far we've been lucky and found rear aero, but no dice with the rest.

I'll link to the car's total rebuild journey in this thread, once I make a thread for said journey.

Thanks for taking the time to read!

Landon
