New guy from Illinois.
Hey all,
My name's Troy, 22 year old from Elgin, and i want to start by saying how awesome all of you guys are. I've been lurking the site for the past couple of months, have already gathered a lot of advice from you guys and figured why not become a member?
So here's my story. This past Fall I was thinking about getting a little project going to keep me busy through the winter. And, to me, it didn't matter what the project was. I was looking for anything. You see, this past summer I unfortunately got a DUI, which in turn left me without a job, drivers license, and VERY limited money. I was desperate for something to take up my time. So, I gathered any and all items that i would be willing to sell/trade, and started scowering craigslist like it was my job, just hoping for anything.
What i ended up finding was a 1987 rx-7 N/A. The ad stated that it had been sitting for over a year, had all parts for it to run- just needed to be re-installed, rusty quarters and rockers, no transmission, bad paint job, lots of extra parts, with clean title. Price was $750 or trade, with a list of items the seller was interested in. I said what the heck, loaded up my gear, grabbed a trailer and headed out there.
This thing was nasty. Half of it was rattle canned black while the rest was original red paint, spots of body filler and bondo all over it, most of the parts to it were in boxes crammed inside of the thing, but i saw its potential. Especially since we agreed on a straight trade- the 7 for an old DSLR camera that i hadn't touched in about 2 years.
So, over the passed few months i've been doing what i could to it with the limited amount of income i have, using this site as my main point of reference. I am completely new to rotary engines, although i have learned quite a bit about them from you guys here, i still have A LOT to learn.
So, here's what i've done to it since purchasing it in mid-Decmeber-
-New rotors all around
-New calipers all around
-New brake lines/hoses all around
-Removed nasty grey carpeting- replaced with clean black carpet
-Swapped instrument clusters
-Swapped hatch with clean one
-Resurfaced flywheel
-Replaced rear main seal
-Replaced needle bearing
-New clutch kit
-Installed trans (Turns out there was a trans bolted in- removed, cleaned, and reinstalled.)
-New clutch master
-New clutch slave
-New clutch line and hose
-Degreased wheels
-Painted wheels
-Removed all trim
-Repainted trim
-LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS OF BODYWORK
-and more body work
its definitely getting close to being close to close to done, maybe? i dont know. BUT- you guys sure have helped alot, and will hopefully be there for anymore problems i run into.
Also- if theres anyone in there NW suburb area willing to come help me out at all, I have the 7 at a local auto shop in South Elgin that lets me work on her after hours, so PM me or however that works! Just let me know!
Thanks again to all of you! Wish me luck!
Cheers.
