Cool New Guy but old RX7 Driver from NC

Hello Folks. I am just joining the club so I am introducing myself and my car. I am a semi-retired engineer living in Eastern NC. I own a 1979 white RX7 that sI have owned since 1967. I spent about 5 years wanting to by one but couldn't convince myself to spend the $. As my son began to approach driving age I started saying "I am going buy us an RX7 that we can work on together." Very soon thereafter he began to ask "Dad, when are yo going to buy me an RX7." Long story shortened, in December 1987 I had an opportunity and enough spare $ to purchase a '79 that had been wrecked and repaired and bought it. In June of 1987, we moved to NC and in Sept, 1988 my son got his drivers license. Guess what, he began to drive the RX7 to school every day until he went off to college. Much time has passed and gradually I have restored the car. I installed a dashboard "cap" to cover the cracked vinyl, replaced the radio to add CD player, had the engine rebuilt essentially stock, replaced the interior vinyl seat upholstery and carpet, and repainted it. I kept the car as stock but did upgrade to '83 vintage RX7 alloy wheels.
I am now driving it more often now in spite of the problems I now have getting in and out of it. I qm much older and it is a whole lot lower than my regular ride of a full size pickup! I do enjoy driving it because it is rare when someone doesn't walk up and share fond memories of the one they used to have. I also get lots of compliments on the restoration.
How many of you are driving one this old!. Speak up and share your fond memories!

Welcome and thanks for sharing. Get a few posts in and you can add some pics of your car. Maybe add the VIN to the 1st GEN registry. Quite a few 79 owners here. A great place to learn more about these cars both mechanically and historically.

Welcome to the board.

Thank you for sharing your history with your '79. I am a little more interested in how you mastered time travel though. [Just joshing you]

I've never owned a '79, or any SA for that matter, so I have no memories to share. It's on my rotary bucket list though. I would love to get a '79, specifically, one day. It doesn't have to be super clean or anything, just "nice enough". I've only ever owned FBs, and I got an FC about 8 years ago. As I said, thank you for sharing your story and I look forward to seeing some photos.

Welcome!! thank you for sharing your story and the car's history!! We would love to see pictures of the car! I have an SA that I drive on occasion. Its an 80 LS that I got from the original owner. Its THE car that got me into RX-7's and I remember seeing it often as a kid growing up in the 80's. Now it sits in my garage and I am proud to own it.
