New from GA

this will be my third rotary, but ive only recently gotten into modding a rotary. my background is v8 related, more specifically, small block ford. my first rotary was a 1987 rx7 (i dont remember the model). it had mufflers and a k&n, otherwise stock. fun car to drive, ended up in a wreck and now it sits in a junkyard. the second was a 1988 parts car that i ended up getting running shortly before i wrecked the 87, and the parts car has since been parted out by the same junkyard that got the 87. my current car (daily driver/toy) is a 1984 GSL-SE. I am not 100% sure on the mods, but here is what i was told: original 6 port 13b that came in the car (i have confirmed that it is a 6 port, not sure if its the original motor), motor has been streetported, sounds like a pretty large streetport, aux port sleeves and actuators removed, cat removed, air pump and related emissions equipment removed, RB power pulse catback, tokico struts and shocks, eibach springs.

I have the following parts ready for installation when i find the time: RB dual outlet header, 2-1 collector, midpipe with presilencer. full body kit from mazdatrix in used but good condition, pass front fender (mine is all bent up). Aside from not idling when its cold, the car runs good and seems to pull decent. im hoping once the RB header is installed i will be able to get mid to low 14's in the 1/4 mile. I will have pictures up sometime this weekend.

As i said, ive been mainly a SBF fanatic since i was very young, but i have taken a liking to rx7's so i am hoping to make some good streetable power and have some fun with this car. the prospect of autocross intrigues me, but i know nothing about it and cost is certainly a factor, so anyone that cares to shed some light would be greatly appreciated. also if any of you gsl-se experts can direct me to fixing my cold idle issue id be grateful. the car runs fine cold, just wont stay running without giving it some gas. i went through the gsl-se idle adjustment procedure, and once it warms up it idles around 800-100 rpm. its a bit rough from the street port, but its steady.

also, does anybody have any experience installing a header on one of these cars? im hoping to install it this weekend, and im HOPING that i will be able to do so without removing the intake, however, if i have to then i have to. also, what kind of power gains can i expect from it? my system will be similar to some of the racing beat full system that they sell, and they claim around 30% hp increase going from stock to a full system, is this really true? i come from a world of v8 pushrod engines, and gains like that from exhaust are simply unheard of, but it would certainly be nice if that were the case. i only have 125 dollars in the entire exhaust system, so 30% power increase would certainly be a nice increase for that price.

a 30% gain might be a little high for your exhaust but you will feel a diffrence in the top end. Install is not to terrible at all, don't misplace the nuts that hold on the manifold, they're bronze with a coarse thread. Have fun

i didnt think it would be all too hard to do. my main question is whether it can be done with the intake in place, or if i have to remove the lower intake to gain access to the bolts. i have every kind of swivel, universal, ratchet, extension, and socket that money can buy so tools are not an issue, but as we all know, sometimes no matter how many tools you have, you still have to go the long way.

Hello from Acworth!

Hello! I was much surprised to see someone on here that is so close to me. I grew up with mainly GM & some Mopar V8s. I'm not familiar with the rotory either. I've always liked the RX series, but I cann't remember the differences with your model. I'm going to look it up later. Did you get the exhaust on and how did it go? I'm still TRYING to diagnose mine. Only getting 10V to pump. I came on tonight looking to see what that might be, but started looking around in here first. Glad I did. Let me know if I can help. We are so damn close, we should be able to help each other out. Take care & good luck!

I am surprised to see someone close as well, and likewise, if you need/want any help, feel free to let me know. i dont do much on the weekends other than goof around with cars and knock back a few. what year and model is your car, when you say 10v to the pump i am assuming that you are talking about the fuel pump, and i am not sure if 12a's have electric or mechanical pumps, so im also assuming you have a 13b. if your car is similar to mine then the voltage to the fuel pump is varied using the flapper in the maf meter (correct me if im telling lies rotary gurus). i would start there to be sure that the flapper is not sticking. personally im not a big fan of that design. my understanding is that its simply a safety precaution to shut the pump off when the engine quits running so that in the event of a wreck the fuel pump wont continue pumping. that safety precaution doesnt concern me at all, so if that or the wiring were suspect, my suggestion would be running new wires from the battery through a relay that is activated on ign power, however as i said, i am not rotary expert and that may not be as easy of a fix as it sounds. it seems that trochoid is one of the 1st gen gurus on here, id give him a chance to chime in on this one.

as for the exhaust, i decided to hold off on the install. i decided over the weekend after reading some posts on the forum that i want to do an s4 intake swap, so im going to tackle it all at once (once i acquire the parts). i think the header will be easier to install with the intake removed so it seems like the opportune time to do it.

let me know if you wanna meet up one weekend and go over your fuel issue, im sure we can get it sorted out. im off east cherokee drive in woodstock, so cant be all that far away from you.

Welcome to the forum. I'm new as well, but everyone here so far has proven to be very friendly and helpful. Savannah is where I call home, but I'm stationed in Hawaii at the moment. haha. I never realized there was an RX7 scene in Savannah... (I discovered that earlier.
