New 79 RX7 owner
It seems I have a soft spot for hatchback sports cars. My first was a 1971 Datsun 240Z. Rescued from backyard, and turned into a successful autox and SCCA road racer before selling in 1987, after my first son was born.
In 2004, wife & I decided the days of minivans was coming to an end, as our kids were all in high school, and wanted to get into something fun to celebrate our 20th anniversary. Looked at getting a 350Z, but wife thought a convertible would be nice this time around. Waited till 350Z convertible hit the dealers.....and we were disappointed by the top up look.
Started looking at other convertible sports cars, and ended up purchasing a used Porsche Boxster. Started autox'ing again, and doing track events. Rather than beat up the Boxster, I ended up purchasing several 944's (hatchback sports cars! ) that my sons and I drive (wife likes the Boxster too much). Eventually got my stripes as a DE instructor, and also got my racing license again.
My oldest boy is now a Marine and stationed in the States as an MP. Unfortunately he doesn't get much time to play at autox or DE's lately.
My middles son is doing the work & school mix right now. But he's a very talented driver. Found out that 24 Hour of LeMons was coming to our home track, Summit Point WV, in 2010 and thought we should field an entry. So one day he says a friend of a friend has a car that been sitting for many years in an underground garage in DC. Was in accident, but never fixed. Lots of body dents but no apparent structural problems. Only 65K original miles, but no clue if it'll still run. Willing to give it away to get it out of the building.
Next thing I know a silver 1979 RX7 has been trailered to our driveway. My son & I managed to get it running, and have high hopes of a fun & competive LeMons racer. Themes for the car/team are still being considered. But looking forward to a fun project with my son.
