My 93 montego gold digger
Hi my name is Adam. I purchased my FD about a year ago from a father and son who had outgrown the hobby. They were into cars but lacked any real understanding of how a turbo rotary car should be set up. They purchased the car bone stock with 70k miles and a blown motor and had the car shipped to KD Rotary for a heart transplant. Over the next few years the previous owner did a good bit of maintenance and several quality modifications to the car. They thought the car was running great and just "needed plugs" when I went to look at it with 110k miles. I am a master tech and have been a mechanic for about 10 years and also did plenty of research before looking for an FD so I knew what I was looking at. The car had a full exhaust but retained a high-flow cat in the midpipe. It was running a 8-15-10 boost pattern when I drove it I immediately pulled over and popped the hood and found a MBC on the pre-spool controller. I turned it way down and managed to get a 7-10-9 boost pattern. The car seemed to run well like this and was very well documented (an entire binder) so I decided to buy the car. I got what I considered to be a good deal on the car. Over the next few months of ownership I dedicated my time to restoring the car. I installed all of the missing interior pieces, replaced missing exterior badges, removed the shoddy stereo system, changed all fluids, fixed all of the boost issues, added some body grounds, adjusted the Tein flexes to my liking, and replaced the narrowband o2 that came with the car with a AEM wideband. The car was running well at this point and albeit really rich, was safe to drive. I enjoyed the car for the next 6k miles. Then problems started. Coolant overflowing after the car was shut off, low coolant lights in the morning even after topping off the night before, and starting on one rotor. I knew my days were numbered. I did a compression cold compression check and came back 60psi on all faces, obviously a tired motor. Finally driving home one day the engine let go. I managed to limp it to my neighborhood and then had my wife pull it with our f250 and a rope lol. It sat for about 6 weeks while I gathered the necessary parts and a rebuilt motor. It took 5 night after work working 2 hours a night to get it all installed. I broke it in on the stock pcm and then bought a PFC. I made the PFC timing maps safer per the FAQs thread and am currently running 11psi non-sequential and a low 11afr. I acquired a set of early 90s mustang gt wheels and some free tires at work and added a vent to the stock hood to aid in cooling. That's the jist of it. Here are some pics. I call her Gold Digger.
