Thumbs up Looking at an 87 rx7 Input!!

Hi Im looking at a co-workers old 87 rx-7. What I know is about two years ago it had motor problems so he took it to a shop. After the mech swapped in a couple used mototrs that smoked & wouldnt pass smog he put a rebuilt in, and its been sitting since. He hasnt driven the mazda to work since the swap but he says it runs & passes smog, hes not TRYING to sell it but hes open to selling it to me..

So to the question, how much money is fair? What should I check when Im inspecting it? The body is poor, it will need work and paint. The interior is all original and probably as poor, expected. He let the exhaust drag for a while & I think it will need to be replaced or patched. The battery will discharge if not started weekly & Im not sure but I think it has a problem with the dash lights. Ive read that the fc had many common electrical problems and in general rotary can be difficult so Im kinda worried. Im going to look at it this week and hopefully buy it any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Kyle welcome. As long as you have some mechanical ability the rotarys are not bad, and in someways easier to work on. There alot of folks on here that can help you out with anything you need to know. Without pic's its hard to tell what it's worth. But one man trash is another mans treasure. Good luck.

Well I went and looked at her today and Im hooked. There was a problem though, when I started it the motor bounced between about 750 and 2500 rpm for five minutes then once it warmed up it stopped bouncing suddenly and stayed at 750 rpm. I drove it then and it was powerful with no hesitations throughout the rpm range. Im hesitant to take this on as neither the owner or I have any Idea why it does this. I spent about half an hour looking for vacuum leaks with no luck. So the battery discharges the motor acts funny during the warm up cycle and it could use new cat back exhaust. Im curious what may be causing the revving during warm up. Thanks, Kyle
