My name is Shawn and I'm an ASE certified mechanic. Ive been studying rebuilding and modifying these motors before I started working on cars professionally. My friend had 12a laying around and wanted to chump car race so he decided to buy a Miata for 500. We started to part it out for money and try to build a custom transmission by swaping the bell houseings. They bolted right on but the input shaft is to long for the engine. That project is now in the backburner and the miata shell is on craigslist for a resinble price.
One year later a second gen came up for sale and the owner said all it needed was a starter. I had a starter. So naturally I contacted the guy. He said he could meet up at 8 am but never gave me an address. So my miata friend came to the rescue and straight up internet stalked the guy and found where he had the car. Ends up it was a tire shop and they opend at 8. So he went and found the guy who didnt expect a random guy comeing to look at his car for sale. He wanted 800 for it but I was set at 5. He said he could scrap the cat for more and would rather scrap the car. So we told him to cut the cat and give it to us for 5. A little bit mad that we called him on his lie he cut out the cat and handed us the keys and title. My bud called AAA and pretened to be me. The care was gone in 30 min and at my doorsteps. Later that day when I got off work we threw on the new starter and the engine still would not crank. After testing the old one and it still worked we oppend every entraince to the engine and filled it with MMO. let it sit for a hr and broke it free with a breaker bar. We drained the engine. Put new fluids in. Checked for spark and gas. Then tried firing her up. Nothing. Tested the compression and the front rotor didnt make **** but on one rotor face.
After the small heartbreak that was deciding to rebuild, I had to plan on what I wanted out of the car. Luckly we had traded a nice old purtorican man the blown miata engine for some iorns and good 13b houseings. The iorns he gave us were ones he was working on for a drag build. They are six port iorns for a second gen that he cut out to be a 4 port. He had some sort of custom intake manifold that was cut out to be just as big but refused to sell it. Naturally I decided to go down the same rout as him and go for a 1000 hp build. I know its a bit over my head and will need tons of help prepping and building. This project is still in the works and needs much more money dumped into it. This is not why im here.
So about a month back my daily driver was totaled when a lady ran a red.I only had 2k. I was looking for a ford ranger because I wanted something small that could haul parts. After seeing too many beat to crap trucks that the owners wanted way too much for a first gen rx7 came up on craigslist. It had no description, no photos and most importantly no phone number. So I emailed him. He replied within 24hr and I looked at it in 48. Its been rebuild by a rotor shop in dallas and had 49k on the motor. Has an omp delete only pre mixed. stock port stock exhaust exept for a cat delete. Racing beat holly intake. Msd box and coils for the dual leading. Rust in the normal 3 spots for a first gen. Guy wanted 25 for it so I ofered 18. He took it. Ive been daily driveing it for a week.
So thats where Im at now. first 2 days it took a little bit of toying with the pedal to get it to start. I was fine with it because what corroborated car dosent have a precise way to start it that only the owner knows. Now it starts quicker than my room mates 2014 outlander.
