SupraRX7

Hey everyone.My Name is Jonathon,and I am from New Hampshire. I've grown up as a car enthusiast since I was born. I was always helping my dad restore porsches and muscle cars (his profession). My first love with Japanese imports started with my purchase of a mk3 supra as my second car while still in high school. Sadly, I sold it to go to college, vowing that one day I would, once again own another mk3 supra when I had the money and time to build one.

Fast forward 10 years, now I've been building a 450rwhp summer daily driver mk3 supra for about 5 years. She's now basically a finished project (minus a respray) and a few other minor things. This car is 99.99999% brand new...and I do mean almost everything is new or upgraded.

Having the supra on it's final stage of being built to my goal, it's time for me to begin another project. Recently, I've really gotten interested in autox'ing, road racing, and hill climb. The supra, being a highway queen automatic...although she'll do a 1/4 in the 11's, is not up to the task being a fat pig (3600lbs). So I've been talking to the local guys here who race, and they recommended an miata (I'm too big for a miata, and it's not my style), a 944, a civic, an old impreza R n/a, or a RX7. Of all of these, I'm strongly considering an rx7.

I've been exploring buying a fb vs. an fc. I've seen that they both have advantages and disadvantages with my preliminary research. A few friends said they'd off to let me test pilot their rx7's to get a feel.

Honestly, I'm pretty excited about picking up an rx7. I have a budget of about 7k to get it autox worthy (this includes car price and mod's). I'm getting into this forum to get help picking and modding an rx7.

You can get a nice turbo fc for 4-5k'ish many already modded out with 300+ HP at the crank

Once you can see the classifieds you'll see alot there.

You need so many posts to get into that section.

Searchtempest.com searches all of Craigslist at once you can use that too, where are you located?

I'm in new hampshire. This makes me almost have to count on spending $1k at minimum to have one shipped to me. I won't likely pick one up locally b/c it's probably a rust bucket.

Cars.com has 3 listed....all either automatic, non turbo, or a vert.

Autotrader has 6; either shells, non turbos, or a few for like $10k...same with ebay. People seem to want a lot of $$ for an FC turbo. I'm a little stumped. I could get into a 911 (nonturbo) for the same amount of money...

I have been autoxing for a few years now and the rx7 is a dominate force. Everyone has a Honda or a miata. There is a well setup rx7 in town that has taken all of our local and regional wins. Only thing that sucks about him is my rx7 is in the same class

Yup...I've got over 20k into my supra. I'll definitely break 25 that when it's painted...they are expensive to upgrade and maintain...but I don't cut corners either. People ask me, "why didn't you just buy an mk4 supra," and I always say, "because it's not an mk3." haha. Don't get me wrong...mk4's are awesome...my brother has had 2 in fact...and they drive like dreams...it's just not my style.

It's amazing for daily driving during the summer. I love the timeless style and the targa. With suspension and brake upgrades combined with 450 at the wheels...she's such a dream to drive. Turns head everywhere

Where is your supra at? What setup are you using/going for?


THis is what I've heard about the rx7's...and why I'm excited to get into one for next season (hopefully). Thanks for only reinforcing my excitement

An FB or FC will be reletively cheap to autox and can be very competitive. I got the piston bug and put an ls1 in mine but either way they are very nimble and competitive
