AZ Hi from Gilbert Arizona '88 13b engine

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a reasonably fresh rebuilt '88 13b engine from a member of this forum and will be installing it in a built from scratch 2 seater long travel Desert / Sand Rail.

I have adapted it to a VW bus 5 rib 002 transaxle race built with a superdiff 4.86:1 final drive. Gear ratios are 1st: 3.55, 2nd: 2.21, 3rd:1.65 and 4th: 1.27. This low transaxle gearing is what made me sell the Fuel Injected Turbo 1915 VW engine and go Rotary for much higher and reliable revs.

The engine management system will be Megasquirt, which I have had good luck with on 2 previous piston powered projects.

The Intake system is home built with a 80mm Throttle body and 3 individual runners after the plenum (1 to each end and 1 to the center ports). This will not be a progressive setup so I anticipate a few challenges for a smooth idle and snappy throttle response. Four 48lb/hr Accel disc type injectors will be used and am shooting for a maximum of 250hp until I upgrade the transaxle to something that can handle more horses.

I have added a T4 Turbo to assist in some extra ponies.

The intercooler and oil cooler will have a sealed fan shroud and fan to pull air through 100% of their finned surface area. Intercooler fan will run constantly and the oil cooler fan will start cooling at 180 degrees oil temp.

Ignition will use stock Mazda RX7 Distributor and coils that came on this engine.

I have adapted a 12a Rotary (as a teenager back in '86) to a VW Baja bug and had a blast with it !

I look forward to conversing with you guys as I will be needing assistance with this setup, especially adapting the Megasquirt into a Rotary compliant version.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all !
