MB Hello from Winnipeg, MB!

Hi, my name is Aaron and I live in winnipeg, mb, canada. I have recently aquired a 83' rx7 with a 12a and i'm currently fixing it up. I got it from the orignal owner and it has just over 163k on it and it's 100% stock. It has been sitting in a barn for about 8 years so needless to say it definatly didnt start or even move for that matter. With new battery posts, fluid change, draning the gumbo out of the gas tank, putting some fresh gas in it and with some simple cleaning it fired right up! I'm fairly new into rotary motors but i'm ready to learn.

I was also wondering what products are safe to be using on a rotary. For example, ive heard that starting fluid is not good to spray into a rotary carb (or anywhere in it) because it will dry out the apex seals and cause them to crack and/or wear out faster. Also anything like a stp water remover to put in the tank to get rid of some of the gunk or even to use sea foam.

The TL;DR of that paragraph is.. which products do you recomend for cleaning and runing through a rotary (to clean the carb and gas tank) and which are safe to use? but most importly which ones are a for sure no good to be using

Ive also heard that the best thing to revive a old 12a is for it just to be running and I know that runing anything through the carb will be no where near as a good as a re-build but it would be nice for the time being until there is time for one.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to hearing back from everyone, See ya in the forums!

Welcome to the world of rotaries! As for what's safe, it's going to be easier to list what to use as opposed to not. There are some that have used carb cleaner. I would only use that with the carb off personally, but one guy claimed the carb cleaner he had contained lubricants, so you'll have to read what's in what you buy.

You can do the "H2O trick" for the engine. I've done this and it's worked great, just search for the procedure. Other than that you're really looking at tune-up stuff; plugs, hoses etc and then actually rebuilding things. I would recommend you compression test also to see where you're at.
