FL Hello from Sarasota, I'm back after 7 years

Hi Everyone,
My name is Shawn, I live in between Sarasota and Tampa on the Gulf coast of Florida. I'm originally from Cali north bay area, but have been out here 3 years for work.

I am currently rotor-less, but I had a silver FD from 2001-04 that I LOVED. It was a pain in the butt sometimes, but aside from a handful of exotics, I don't think there is another car I love the lines of more.

My previous baby was a silver 93 5sp (Touring, I think) with red interior. I bought it cheap with a banged up front end and needing an engine rebuild. Long story short I did the reliability stuff, Power FC commander, etc, pretty much everything short of new turbos. Then had it tuned by XS Engineering in LA. Anyway, only maybe 6 months after everything finally was working and I was enjoying the car, I found out I got into medical school, so there just wasn't any way, time or $$ wise that it made sense to hold on to the car and let it sit for 4+ years. I just knew I would need something more reliable. I sold it on Ebay to a guy in Florida ironically, which is where I am now.

I'm looking at getting back into an FD in the next 6-12 months or so now that I'm done with school and training etc. I just can't get the idea out of my mind

Sorry this is long- but I have to say though, when I owned the car, even back in 01... These forums saved me SO much money, and the write-ups that so many people did (many with photos) made it actually fun to work on the car. Well fun and frustrating at times lol.

Anyway, thanks to all those who put in the time to share their expertise with others. There are a ton of car forums out there, in my experience this one is pretty unique in that for the most part, people are helpful and actually more passionate about the cars than they are about making themselves look smart.

I dug up a photo I took when listing the car back in 04. Here she was. My then gf (now wife's) dad owned a body shop,so repainted the whole thing a Ferrari silver, and if I remember correctly had the stock wheels powder coated.

Hi Shawn,
Glad to have you back here on RX-7CLUB!
7 years is a long time, but a good number.
When you get your new FD I hope this forum can continue to be a help to you, if not more.
Good luck on finding another. Seems like there are quite a few down your way. Who knows maybe you can buy your old one back. I've seen it happen several times before...
Great pic btw.

Thanks for the warm welcome back.

Finding my car again would be crazy! I have to be honest part of me dreams about some gnarly LSx swap, but part of me wants to stay pure rotary. Makes it a little tough in terms of narrowing down what to buy- I am somewhat reluctant to buy a well preserved FD only to rip its guts out, but not sure I want to start with a roller either. If I could find and re-purchase my original car my dilemma would be solved!! I wouldn't feel too bad about tearing into her again. haha.

I think the most logical thing will be to get a running car in good shape, upgrade the stuff I want to, drive and just enjoy it for a while, and just see what happens.

Good to be back though

FL I agree

I totally agree, I don't think anything has the look or feel of an FD.

I'm really getting the itch to get back into it, the more I look through more posts/photos, etc. Have to save a little more $$ up to get what I'm looking for I think.

Aside from the obvious stuff (ie a car that's not trashed), I've come to the conclusion that my only criteria are pretty much clean title and relatively clean black interior. I don't think anything else will match what I have in mind for the color I want to paint it.

Strangely enough I found the exact color I have been looking for on my wife's road bike. It's just slightly darker than the stock silver, and I think has just a tiny hint of brown/tan- here's a pic. The frame is sort of a gradient from light to dark silver, the specific color I can hopefully match as a sample is the area/ bar with the arrow.

I just hope I can find one. Seems like clean cars are getting more and more rare. (granted 3rd gens are approaching 20 years old now)
