Hello from a S2K owner - France

Hello everyone !

Arnaud, 21, French, pursuing an Automotive Engineering Master degree and owner of a Honda S2000 (AP1), my second car. My first car was an Impreza 2.0 NA (GH), the sound of the Boxer 4 without the performance of the turbocharged Impreza. And I was used to drive my father's ex-GT-R R35, not the most sensational car but its performances on road and on track were f**king incredible.

I'm here to find info about RX-7, more precisely FD ones. I don't know yet, if I will buy one (painful to import one in France because of our absurd administration) but I'm curious about rotary engines and chassis looks fine too.

Glad to read you.

Welcome to the club, Arnaud. I hope that you will find what you are looking for. I've spent some time in France, and I've only seen 1 FD (black one in Paris). I've seen some RX-8s, but never came across any 1st/2nd gen RX-7s.

Once you get your post count up, we do have a regional section dedicated to Europe that you should check out to find other people in your area and maybe someone can point you towards an FD that is for sale in your area so you wouldn't have to import one.

Good luck.

Kent

I know 3 or 4 people with FB or FC but only one with a FD and he lives in Japan, not really fair.
There are so few FD in France that the only ones you can find on the market are heavily modded or/and have high mileage (90 000miles +) or/and are too expensive (20 000$ +).

So I need to find the better way to import an FD and deal with the authorities.

cool!!
i have an AP1 as well!
i love it!!
the FD is faster, but comes at a price.
you cannot beat the reliability of the AP1s...
same weight, rear wheel drive.. but i miss the `kick` from the FD when the turbo kicks in though..

It's true that the AP1 and AP2, only make the difference compared to "normal" cars after 70mph. But the chassis is really good and the sound is incredible.
I want an FD because I want a chassis as good as the AP1's one but with the 'kick' I found in my father's R35. And for the sound, I'm sure the FD hasn't the worse

Just a question : Why did you quit the FD for the AP1 ?

The FD was my brothers, so i would borrow it from time to time. we hit the tracks a couple of times. He sold it when he had his kid, despite that i told him to sell the kid, not the car.

chemicalviper, how would you describe the difference?
In terms of handling, i think they are both pretty comparable, until the apex.
the biiiiig difference is the after the apex. the FD has more grip, more power, but the steering is more sensitive requiring a bit more precision..

In my experience, the FD is quicker around a road course, but the S2K is easier to drive at the limit. If you're a good driver, the FD will make minced meat.
If you're an average weekend track warrior, the S2K might even be a little more fun...flickable, but easily reeled back in. If you're a Time Attack guy whos taking things seriously, the RX-7 is flat-out faster.

There's no comparison on the sound.

Thanks all for the feedback.

@masarx7: Do you really think that the FD has more grip than the AP1 EU Spec post-2004 (= AP2 US Spec with AP1 engine) ?
I ask because I 've never lost grip in WOT mode on a "normal" conditions. Of course in wet or cold conditions, it's not the same thing.

@Natey: I love tri-rotor and quadri-rotor sounds. I've already heard RX-8 sound (yes, it has an engine sound, I swear.) and FB sound (you can't miss it) but never FC turbo or FD sounds in real life.

Welcome.

coming from an s2k you will adapt quickly to the FD. Stock for stock, the s2k will probably handle better but with the wide variety of aftermarket options for the FD's you will be able to choose what best suits your suspension needs.

Agreed with Natey and Polak Graphics.
Natey: the FD will smoke the S2k hands down. but driving the track with the top down, and driving at the limit with some tail sliding.. what joy!! the S2k reinforces why i love this sport in the first place.. the term driving pleasure comes to mind. as opposed to the FD, its a fine tuned time attack machine that has very little forgiveness.. its fast, but i think the fun factor leans a bit toward the s2k/FC3S. But as Polak Graphics says, this is comparing both cars STOCK, with no suspension mods.

I have the AP1 with crap rear tires, so i think i have to step up to a more grippy tires soon for a better comparison w/ the FD. I cant remember what the FD rears were, but the US AP1 rears are 225/50/16. The rears come out very often for me with the s2k, not nearly as much as when i was driving the FD. But that also could be the difference of NA and turbo as well.. bottom line.. im not good enough to tell! lol,

I remember like 10 years ago, there was a triple rotor FD at the san diego region autocross. that car performed and sounded amazing.. i wonder what happened to that car..

EU AP1 post-2004 rears are 245/40/17 and I have installed TEIN MonoFlex suspensions, so it's understandable that my AP1 have more grip than yours.

Is it frequent that people swap 20B in FD ?
