KS Hello from Kansas

Hello everyone. I have been reading and looking around this site for awhile now and wanted to get in on the fun. My name is David and I have a 1981 rx7 that was in pretty bad shape when i first got it. So far i have 90% of the interior taken out and soaping/armoralling what i can.

The guy i got it from had it sitting in a field for 4 or so years and unbeknown-st to him the passenger side window had been rolled down for X years of it's sit. the engine is about ready to be pulled because it's carbon locked (i am guessing) and i want to go through it piece by piece but i got it as a trade for an old farm 4-wheeler! i am happy with the trade.

Much of the interior is going to have to be replaced as rats treated some of it as a snack. i know it's going to be a LOT of work bringing her back to life but it's my dream car and i am more than happy to get another rotary on the road.

Where are you located in Kansas? Most people with RX7s seem to be up around the Kansas City area. Not too many out here in farm country. I bought a 1979 with a bad engine and am also in the process of trying to get it back on the road. Luckily mine has a near perfect interior and a really nice body though. So if you need to know how it's supposed to look when putting it back together, I might be able to help out, good luck and have fun. I love the first Gens look and size too.

I know of at least 5 people in Overland park and a couple in Olathe. Most probably keep their cars garaged until the weather gets a little better. But even if everyone brought their cars out, it's still a very small number in the overall numbers of cars on the road, so seeing one is rare. I've never seen an RX7 in my area and only one RX8.

i actually have had a lot of luck with the interior so far. just a lot of the plastic is faded from the sun but is still workable and not too bridle. the dash and pretty much everything around it is trash though.

Im in Independence kansas. SEK. it has been a looooong time since i have seen any 7's around here. maybe tonight i will get around to posting some pics of the interior so far. i'm waitin on pulling the engine and tranny till i get some room made in my garadge.

Not much time to work on the car lately going to school full time and working full time. but i spend almost every second i have free to work on it and am happy so far with the progress i have made

The guys over in Pittsburg opened a shop if you run into trouble, it's pretty close to Independence. When I pulled apart my 79's 12A, the front housing and iron were pretty much toast, it's a shame because the rest of the engine looks to be near perfect. So if you need parts when you tear yours down, give me a yell, I might be able to help you out.

yea i believe i have driven by it before. by the way the guy who owned it before me treated this thing you will probably be hearing from me soon. Besides that i go through great bend once in awhile to see my uncle so it would be easy to make an exchange. it's scary finding some of the receipts in the glove box of how much oil they had to put in it to top it off. one even said 3 qts. i teared up a little after reading that one.

It's most likely the oil control rings. I'm swapping over to a 13B so I won't be reusing most of my parts. The good thing is that the rotary is a very simple engine to tear down, putting all the seals back in might be a little more tricky though.
