hello from denver
Hey all,
I bought an s4 13bt motor and tranny (600$) off craigslist that i'm gonna rebuild myself as much as i can. If all goes well, i hope it will be going into something. If not, this will be a way for me to learn as much as i can about rotary engines before my next project.
So far, It has been really fun working on this. I got a four foot piece of pipe and a 2 and 1/8 inch socket and popped the flywheel nut off. As i've read on the forum before, i think that is probably a fun first time memory for anyone whose ever worked on these. Next was breaking down the rest of the engine so i can get a good look at what exactly is going on inside. I know it will need a new set of gaskets and a good rebuild, I'm still busy learning about apex seals and what not to figure out what else i'll need. It looks like the rear rotor housing might be a little damaged but i'm hoping JHB can take out the minor imperfection.
I know at some point i'm going to run into a problem that someone on this forum can help me with. I'm looking forward to it!

There a lot of rolling chassis's for sale on the forums. Just pick which generation you like. The second generation would be easiest with your engine. I'm currently collecting parts to swap an 87 naturally aspirated into a 79 base model (I like the the first gens). You need a few more parts but it looks pretty doable. Even the earlier RX2, RX3, and REPU pickup would be good material to swap your engine into. Any way you go you'll have a lot of fun.

well the engine tear down is mostly complete. It was really dirty. Most of the apex seals were stuck, one was blown, most of the side seals were stuck. The good news is the housings are in good enough shape that i can send them off for resurfacing. I talked to jonathan at goopy and that seems like a good place to start. The rest of the teardown was really instructive. I spent the afternoon with the electronic caliper going over tolerances and whatnot. The oil seal rings look good. All and all, i think its rebuildable.

ordered the block off plate from pineapple racing for the OMP, oil injector holes on the housings, rotor housing coolant plug, a new motor mount and bracket. I don't have a parts washer and have hand cleaned pretty much the whole motor inside and out. In the mean time this has given me time to decide a strategy, which is pretty much to block off plate anything i can, stick and intake and carb on this motor and a distributor. I stilll haven't decided which apex seals to go with, 2mm vs 3mm, carbon, ceramic, etc... or what kind of porting to do. I'm trying to read the threads and not post questions until i actually need some help. The major issue on this build is still money, not lack of know how.
