Hello from B.C. Canada!

Hey guys, my name is Harrison and I live in B.C. Canada, I am 18 years old and currently in college trying to figure out what in the world I want to do with my life, my only true passion is cars, so I am thinking of becoming a tech, but really anything that can fund my obsession with cars will do!

I don't own a rotary powered car yet, but wanted to make a profile to begin creeping around, as I am hoping my next project is triangle powered! My current ride is a 1991 Mazda Miata, it was my first car and I hope to keep it forever, the car has taught me a lot and helped me fall in love with driving!

Here is a link to my Miata.net build/resto thread that is still in progress if you are interested: [NA] My BRG Miata, First Car, First Build! - MX-5 Miata Forum

The build is going slow for the next while as funding is tight, and I want to keep that car pretty close to stock. That's why I am on here, I am scoping out info for my first all out build, something I won't have to worry about DDing, and a project I can be thorough with as I don't have to keep it running between mods! I have been very restrained with my Miata as for now it is my DD, and I want to keep it reliable and ready for long road trips without discomfort or worries, but this next car I plan on going a bit more crazy.

Why a rotary car for my next? Well I fell in love with the engine style when I helped my friend bring back his dead 86 Rx7. It was a base model naturally aspirated car, and when he got it it didn't run, and had been sitting in a field for 10 years. It had 340,000km's on a motor from what we could tell had never been rebuilt! (or had much maintenance at all!)

Too add to that, we had next to no budget, my friend had gotten the car for free from a family member and needed to get it on the road for under $1000... He knew nothing about cars, and I only knew a bit at the time, but nevertheless I somehow was stupid enough to volunteer to help him! Went over to his house and did the most thorough check I could without taking much apart, I didn't know much about rotary's so I kinda just did the tests you would on a piston engine that had not been ran in years, the motor spun well by hand, all fluids were full and clean, and that's all we really checked before throwing the leftover gas from my lawnmower in, a fresh battery, and a whole lot of crossed fingers! Started up after about 5 seconds of cranking, and sounded insane... maybe a little too insane, later learned that was because somehow the headers had been disconnected from the mid pipe! Tried to roll the car back and forth a bit and that's when we learned all 4 of the brakes were seized... Called CAA and got the car dragged on and flatbeded to our high school auto shop so we could take a look at it on a hoist. That's when we found out that the car was leaking from every brake line and every fuel line due to horrible Ontario winters, and that all four of the brakes were completely gone. We also found some great sprayfoam rust repair, and we knew this car was never going to be anything beautiful, but hopefully we could at least get it to run! 2 months later and we had redone every brake line and fuel line, new rotors, pads, and calipers on all 4 corners, new mid pipe and associated gaskets, and the cheapest tires we could find (expired Walmart no name winters!)
The car was a peice of garbage, but my friend was pretty proud of it, and we hoped it would last him the summer! After somehow convincing someone to pass it through a safety inspection it was done! He didn't know how to drive stick so I took it for the first drive, I fell in love with the motor instantly, despite the fact that the car was wrecked, and had 340,000km on a motor we never even looked at fixing anything in, it was the smoothest running car I had ever driven, the lack of power steering felt awesome, and I knew at some point in my life I needed to have one!

Sadley at the end of the summer the car blew up like we thought it would, I am not sure what happened as I had moved to B.C. that summer and couldn't come take a look at it, it might have been an easy fix, but without me my friend didn't know what to do to try fix it, so he gave it away for next to nothing. He gave away his Rx7, dropped out of highschool, and bought a riced out Dodge neon... needless to say we aren't really friends anymore.

But the car left me wanting more! So in the next year or 3 I am on the lookout for a clean FB or FC for an awesome build, don't know what I will do yet but I know it needs to be turbocharged, and somthing weekend drivable but also ready for a track day or autocross at whim! I'll be creeping around the forums learning as much as I can and maybe participating in the chat a bit, hopefully one day soon I will be a rotary owner like the rest of you!
